Zack Snyder has made some divisive movies over the last decade, so what will people think about a movie that reported is just about “hot lesbian action?” According to Army of the Dead star, Tig Notaro, it’s going to be a blast and Snyder was fully on board with her pitch.
Notaro’s casting in Snyder’s Netflix zombie heist movie was not originally planned, but following allegations of misconduct against Chris D’Elia, the director completely stripped D’Elia from the movie and brought in Notaro to film scenes against green screen, which were then added to the final movie.
Despite only having a small role in the movie, Notaro found herself going viral for “being sexy” in the movie, which let her to pitching a completely different action movie to Snyder. Speaking to On With Kara Swisher, Notaro said:
“I called Zack, and I said, ‘I’m hearing it from straight men, gay men, gay women, and straight women that they think I’m hot in this movie. What if we just went for it and everyone’s a hot lesbian?’ He was like, ‘Oh my God, yes, let’s make that movie.’ And so who knows? It’s a Hollywood project. We’re in the process of putting the script together. Picture this poster: We have the name of the film, and then it says ‘Hot Lesbian Action.’ Come on. That’s how I sold him on the Zoom.
“The movie is called ‘Deviants,’ and takes place back in some old-timey-days, like some closeted deviants.”
There are currently no further details about this movie known, and it seems like everything is in the very early stages right now. After the reception of several of Snyder’s recent movies, this doesn’t exactly sound like a movie that fits with his big, explosive library of films…or maybe it does.
Zack Snyder’s Netflix Collaboration Has Not Been Going to Plan
A decade ago, Zack Snyder looked to be made for life with an upcoming Justice League movie set to be released and continue his journey in the DCEU. However, when Snyder was forced to leave the project due to the tragic passing of his daughter, things never quite hit the same heights for the director despite a massive deal with Netflix landing in his lap.
Although Snyder was able to finally deliver his version of Justice League in 2021, the content he created for Netflix came with huge budgets but did not deliver the kind of viewership that the streamer had hoped. Army of the Dead was a reasonable hit, and spawned a prequel movie, Army of Thieves. A direct sequel was also announced, under the title of Planet of the Dead, but in 2024 it was revealed that the project was…well, dead.
Last month, Netflix revealed that there were no plans for Snyder’s animated mythology series, Twilight of the Gods, to get a second season, and his massive Star Wars-esque epic Rebel Moon gained such terrible reviews that it is doubtful whether any more movies will follow. An action movie based around the LAPD is also seemingly on hold. Now, the only thing certain is that Snyder has a movie called The Last Photograph in post-production, and an MMA movie, Brawler, somewhere in pre-production. Is it likely that this new “hot lesbian action” movie will make it to the finish line? It is hard to really know.
