The Fantastic Four: First Steps ended its theatrical run after grossing over $500 million worldwide. The film, which stars Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Joseph Quinn, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach, introduces audiences to a new MCU team, setting up for future films like Avengers: Doomsday. Even with its connection to the MCU, the film maintains a unique identity that has helped it succeed with fans.
The film has already been on paid video-on-demand (PVOD) for a month, and it’s time for it to make its way to Disney+. On Friday, October 24, Gizmodo revealed that the film would be added to Disney+ on November 5. That’s the shortest amount of time for a Marvel film to go from theaters to streaming this year, but Disney might have plans in mind for the film. The Fantastic Four: First Steps will also receive an IMAX enhanced version when it makes its debut on the streaming service.
‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Streaming Dates, Explained
The Fantastic Four: First Steps will be available for all Disney+ subscribers on November 5. That’s perfect timing for families getting together for Thanksgiving and for the streaming service to use the film to attract subscribers with Black Friday deals. Audiences who subscribe to the ad-based plan ($11.99 per month) or the premium plan ($18.99 per month) can watch the film. Disney+ subscribers who also have Hulu will be able to access the movie through Hulu. Subscriptions to both services can be bundled for just $1 more each month.
Disney+ won’t be the only way to watch the film, especially if audiences don’t want to subscribe to the streaming service. The film is available to purchase on digital retailers such as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and Prime Video for $20, although that price should go on sale in the next few weeks. The film will likely be available to rent on these retailers around the same time as its Disney+ release. Blu-ray releases of the film are also available for those who love the movie or just physical media in general. The film has a standard Blu-ray release for $22.99, a 4K release for $26.99, and a steelbook for $43.99. DVDs are also available for $18.99.
According to ScreenRant, Thunderbolts* took 117 days before coming to Disney+, and Captain America: Brave New World, the Marvel film before Thunderbolts*, took 103 days. The Fantastic Four: First Steps joins Disney+ 103 days after its theatrical release, tying it for the shortest timeframe between theatrical and streaming release for a Marvel film this year. That’s a bit strange, considering The Fantastic Four: First Steps was supposed to be Marvel’s big film this year, and the last MCU film until Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Release Will Be IMAX Enhanced
Gizmodo also reported that The Fantastic Four: First Steps will have an IMAX enhanced version on Disney+. Obviously, it won’t be the same as watching the film in an IMAX theater, but it will attempt to replicate the feeling. The film joins a select list of movies on the service to have this feature, and it’s the newest since Captain America: Brave New World. The IMAX enhanced version will use the same expanded ratio the film had in IMAX theaters, allowing audiences to see “26% more of the original image.” This feature will be available to all Disney+ subscribers, so no need to upgrade to the highest tier just for the experience. IMAX enhanced sound will also be available for viewers with compatible sound systems.
‘The Fantastic Four: First Steps’ Is a Movie That’s Worth the Wait
The wait for Fantastic Four‘s streaming availability will be worth it in the end. The Fantastic Four: First Steps is one of Marvel’s best films post-Avengers: Endgame. Audiences and critics agree: the film has a certified fresh Rotten Tomatoes score, with 86% of critics and 91% of viewers giving it their approval. That also makes The Fantastic Four: First Steps the first Fantastic Four movie to receive any positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With its unique visual style and highly lovable characters, it’s hard not to enjoy the film.
When The Fantastic Four: First Steps lands on Disney+, it will be essential viewing for even moderate fans of the MCU. The characters introduced in the movie — Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Thing, Human Torch, and Doctor Doom — will be vital to upcoming films, particularly Avengers: Doomsday. Mister Fantastic may lead the Avengers in that film alongside his teammates, while Doctor Doom will serve as the villain. Vanessa Kirby has also confirmed that her role in Avengers: Doomsday will look different compared to The Fantastic Four: First Steps. Look out for the film when it hits Disney+ on November 5.
