Season 4 of Invincible is set to continue the incredible adult animation which has been a huge critical hit on Prime Video. However, one person who will not be coming back for the new season is Breaking Bad star Aaron Paul, who has stepped away from the role for a very specific reason.
Speaking on the Kinda Funny Games podcast, Paul explained why he could not continue in his role despite having a deep love of the show and the people involved in it. He said:
“They asked me to come back for the next season but I gotta tell you, that show…I’m such a fan of, I watch every episode, I love it. But it was just way too gruelling on my psyche. I have such respect for what they are doing but Powerplex…man, he really, he’s not just messing around. I mean he’s going through turmoil. And you know how I approach everything I do, I really put myself in that skin and it was a skin I didn’t feel comfortable with to be honest. I did not want to do it anymore. I love the guys, everyone in that camp is amazing, but what it did to me I didn’t like so I couldn’t continue.”
Who Is Powerplex in ‘Invincible,’ and Why Is He So Hard to Play?
While Aaron Paul has certainly played some emotionally damaged characters during the last decade, including Breaking Bad‘s Jesse Pinkman, playing Powerplex seems to have come at a time when it doesn’t sit right with the kind of role the actor wants to play. In the series, Powerplex is a secondary antagonist, described as:
“He is a delusional and emotionally unstable scientist, who irrationally desires revenge on Invincible for his unintended role in the deaths of his sister and niece as well as the self-inflicted deaths of his wife and son.”
While fans have already started speculating on who could replace Paul in the upcoming season, while also questioning whether the birth of his own son in 2022 has played some part in his issues with the kind of grief Powerplex is struggling with in the show. Regardless of the exact reason, fans are sorry to see Paul leave the show, but, as always, it will go on. Prime Video has not yet shared any information on who will take over the role.
Invincible is expected to return for Season 4 in 2026.
