It’s been 12 years, but the long-awaited return of Vin Diesel as Richard B. Riddick is finally happening. The action star has now unleashed a new look at the upcoming sci-fi action sequel, and it finds the actor back in character and sporting the reflective eyes that have become so synonymous with the intergalactic outlaw. You can check out this latest look at Riddick 4, titled Riddick: Furya, below…
Taking to Instagram, Diesel shared the image of his Riddick return alongside the caption, “What these Furyan eyes have seen… “ While the image doesn’t give too much away (we’re still waiting patiently for the first footage from the follow-up), seeing Diesel back in character is exciting enough for now. However, with this in mind, he needs to hurry up with that trailer as fans have been waiting for over a decade.
Set to be written and directed once again by David Twohy alongside creators Jim and Ken Wheat, the sci-fi action sequel not only finds Diesel as the lead but also as a producer on the project. Alongside the new image, the official synopsis for Riddick: Furya has also been released and reads:
“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.”
The Riddick Universe Is Expanding…
Vin Diesel first played Richard B. Riddick way back in 2000’s cult sci-fi horror action hit Pitch Black. Introduced as a convict who, alongside the rest of the crew of a crashed spaceship, must survive on a planet inhabited by nocturnal monsters, both the character and the lore surrounding him have greatly expanded since. This expansion began with 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, which revealed that Riddick is actually the last of the Furyans, an “elder race” known for their strength both physically and mentally. The last audiences saw of Riddick was in 2013’s Riddick which, unlike Chronicles’ epic approach, took the series back to its roots to tell another smaller, more insular tale as the character finds himself once again stranded on a merciless planet and evading a lethal group of mercenaries.
With the Fast and Furious franchise now set to come to an end with an eleventh installment (though, as recent reports reveal, it may have surprisingly already ended with 2023’s Fast X), Diesel is no doubt looking for his next major franchise, and Riddick could be it. Alongside the fourth movie, the actor has previously teased a Riddick shared universe, saying, “The Riddick universe is expanding… so cool. Inspired.”
Riddick: Furya is not the only long-awaited sequel on Vin Diesel’s agenda, with the action star also set to return for The Last Witch Hunter 2, which was confirmed to be in development back in September.
