The long-awaited return of Vin Diesel as Richard B. Riddick is finally happening, and the action star has now revealed a new look at his highly anticipated comeback. Now titled Riddick: Furya, the fourth outing in the sci-fi action franchise has been in the works since as far back as 2014 and will delve more into the title characters’ mysterious origins than ever before.
Taking to Instagram, Diesel shared an image of himself looking sharp his slick Furyan armor. Captioning the image simply with the word “Furyan…” the image reveals Diesel in a pair of bladed gauntlets that he will no doubt use to take down whoever makes the mistake of getting in his way. You can check out the new image of Diesel’s Riddick return below…
Set to be written and directed once again by David Twohy alongside creators Jim and Ken Wheat, the sci-fi action sequel not only finds Diesel as the lead but also as a producer on the project. Alongside the new image, you can also check out the official synopsis for Riddick: Furya below, which reads:
“Riddick finally returns to his home world, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.”
Fans Have Been Waiting 12 Years for Riddick’s Return…
First introduced more than two decades ago in the acclaimed sci-fi horror outing Pitch Black, Riddick remains one of Vin Diesel’s most beloved characters and franchises. While the first movie tells an insular story of a crew whose spaceship crash-lands on a planet inhabited by nocturnal monsters, the sequel, 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick, vastly expanded the lore and finds the character battling an empire hellbent on obliterating humanity known as the Necromongers.
Unlike its predecessor, the follow-up was met with largely negative reviews as well as being a disappointment at the box office. Thus, the last audiences saw of Riddick was in 2013’s Riddick, which took the series back to its roots to tell another smaller, more isolated tale as the character finds himself once again stranded on a merciless planet and evading a lethal group of mercenaries (though it still yielded mixed results). Diesel has been teasing a fourth outing ever since, with returning director David Twohy having previously teased how the sequel will explore Riddick’s mysterious past.
“Our legion fans have demanded it for years, and now we’re finally ready to honor their call to action with Riddick: Furya. My collaboration with Vin and One Race has spanned 20 fruitful years, as together we’ve created three movies, two video games, an anime production, and motion comics for the internet. This new big-screen event will see a return to Riddick’s homeworld, where we finally get to explore Riddick’s genesis.”
With the Fast and Furious franchise now set to come to an end with an eleventh installment (though, as recent reports reveal, it may have surprisingly already ended with 2023’s Fast X), Diesel is looking to launch several new action franchises in its wake. Alongside Riddick 4, Diesel is now set to return for The Last Witch Hunter 2, with xXx 4 also on his mind.
