Paranormal Activity became one of the most profitable movies of all time when it turned its $215,000 budget into a $194 million box office in 2009. After numerous sequels, with a new stage show also on the way, the franchise is also branching out into a new video game that will haunt players called Paranormal Activity: Threshold, and the first look is here to terrify you.
The new game from Darkstone Digital – the company behind The Mortuary Assistant – is not the first time the franchise has dabbled in the video game market. Paranormal Activity: Sanctuary was a 2011 mobile game and Paranormal Activity: The Lost Soul dipped into the VR world in 2017.
Paranormal Activity: Threshold will come with the familiar story threads of the franchise; an ordinary family, an unseen and disturbing entity, and plenty of jump-scares. The first-person perspective of the game retains the voyeuristic nature of the Paranormal Activity franchise, and puts the player behind a video camera through which they can explore the house, discover items and find themselves in the presence of something unworldly, which may or may not decide to attack without warning. You can see the first horrifying footage of the game below.
‘Paranormal Activity’ Is Coming to Life in a New Stage Show
While it would not be surprising to see the Paranormal Activity franchise continue with another new movie sometime in the future – after all, horror franchises never really die – the next expansion will actually bring the spooky and disturbing atmosphere of the series to life on stage in London’s West End. This December, the Ambassador’s Theatre in London, England, will become a haunted palace with Paranormal Activity: A New Story Live on Stage taking up residence there for a 12-week run.
While the stage show will not follow a particular storyline from the movies, it will continue to expand on the themes of malevolent forces that have become the hallmark of the Paranormal Activity franchise. Sharing some details on bringing the horror franchise to the stage, director Felix Barrett previously said:
“I’m so thrilled that ‘Paranormal’ will have a chance to ensnare and unnerve audiences in London later this year. From seeing the advertising campaign of the film 20 years ago, where you watched cinema audiences leap out of their chairs in horror, I have long wondered how you could recreate that visceral reaction in a theater setting. How do you bring one of the most frightening films to life? How do you break the inherent safety that a plush West End theater offers? It’s been an incredible challenge, and we cannot wait to see how London audiences respond.”
Between the new video game and stage show, fans of the Paranormal Activity franchise may be getting plenty more ways to experience the chills and thrills without the arrival of a new movie, but they probably won’t be getting much sleep.
