Vampire Weekend’s headlining set at this weekend’s Simply Like Heaven competition included a five-song “salute to indie” medley that includes covers of Tame Impala, Phoenix, TV on the Radio, Seaside Home, and Grizzly Bear.
As they usually do nowadays, the band carved out a part of the climactic stretch of their set for some well-chosen covers. Because the competition is itself is a dedication to indie rock circa 2000 to, say, 2015 (and featured fellow units from Bloc Occasion, Empire of the Solar, Unknown Mortal Orchestra, and a reunited Rilo Kiley and TV on the Radio), Vampire Weekend determined to mud off a couple of renditions of songs by their friends.

They kicked off the covers part with a rendition of Phoenix’s “Lisztomania,” a becoming alternative, as frontman Ezra Koenig guested with Phoenix at final yr’s Simply Like Heaven to carry out their collaborative tune “Tonight” in addition to the man indie staple, “1901.”
