Campbell dives deep into the story of “Refugee” from Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers’ album Rattling the Torpedoes, taking us behind the scenes of the track’s creation and sharing how a spontaneous demo led to one of many band’s best hits. Beginning along with his early influences, Campbell displays on how a easy four-track recording at house – created only for enjoyable – laid the muse for “Refugee.” He recounts how the music flowed naturally from his love for Albert King’s guitar sound, and the way Tom Petty’s lyrics introduced the track to life.
“I gave him a cassette [with the demo] and he went house, and I’ve heard from his household that he would sit and play the cassette again and again and hum alongside to it and attempt to seize a spark of some kind,” Campbell says of the lyrics. “The lyric is so highly effective and it’s timeless, you already know? It’s happening at present, and that’s what’s so stunning about. Lots of people join with, ‘You gotta reside your life, and don’t let the massive man push you down. Don’t must reside like a refugee. Hold combating for what you imagine .’ And that was Tom, that was simply from his soul… a really pure place and a spot of hope and redemption.”
