Released in September 1979, Eskimo is a concept album loosely based on Inuit culture and meant to critique Western imperialism and exploitation. Its soundscape juxtaposes droning chants against a backdrop of grinding synths, which a press release describes as “part satire, part sound sculpture, and wholly unlike anything before or since.”
Each show on the tour will feature The Residents performing Eskimo in full, promising to expand the album’s mythology through “a surrealist ritual, featuring narration, characters, and staging.”
Earlier this year, The Residents released their three-act opera, Doctor Dark, featuring orchestration by conductor Edwin Outwater. Blending heavy metal with symphonic flourishes, the project marked their first studio album since 2020.
