The long-awaited sequel to the 1985 adventure action film The Goonies was announced earlier this year, 40 years after the original made a huge impact on popular culture. The development of the film has been kept under wraps, but according to original star Ke Huy Quan, who plays Data in the film, the sequel is still alive, and a script has been turned in. Does this mean The Goonies 2 could enter production soon?
Months ago, The Goonies 2 was announced as officially in the works. The announcement included the return of original producer Steven Spielberg and original screenwriter Chris Columbus. However, Columbus will now have the role of producer, as Potsy Ponciroli is taking care of the script. Regardless of these official roles, Spielberg and Columbus will likely help when conceiving the story. Nothing else has been revealed about The Goonies sequel, and more details will surely be announced by Warner Bros. in the near future.
However, when talking to Comic Book about the release of Zootopia 2, Quan did share a few details. Per his words, we can assume that he’s somehow involved in the making of the movie, yet he didn’t deny he’s playing Data again. The Oscar-winning actor is just offering the most important production update we’ve gotten so far: there is a script, and the powers that be are “happy about it”:
“I first heard about it when I saw Steven Spielberg at an event, and he was so excited. We try to do it, so let’s manifest it. I know we’ve been trying for the last 40 years, but I feel quite good about it. This time, Chris Columbus and Spielberg are developing it, we have an incredible writer. I mean, I read he turned in the second draft, and they’re really happy about it.
“I was telling Fortune [Feimster], I said, ‘We’re going to do it.’ I want her to be in it. I would love to revisit that character and go on another adventure with my Goonies brothers and sisters.”
Is the Original Cast of ‘The Goonies’ Returning for the Sequel?
The story is a huge part of the project. But it isn’t more important than the film’s casting. Who will star in The Goonies 2 is easily the most important part of the movie, and those in charge will surely try to keep it all a secret until the very end. Naturally, fans are expecting the classic cast to return and reprise their roles. But as beloved as they are, the important question is, can the film work if it revolves around the original Goonies? After all, 40 years have passed since we saw them fighting the Fratellis, and they’re all grown up now.
Josh Brolin, famous for playing Brand Walsh in The Goonies, did share his opinion about the sequel, and the possibility of returning as the character he played when he was a teenager: “The trepidation that I have is that you release something else that taints that. I don’t want to taint what my memory of it [is]. You know what I mean? It’s like, ‘Oh, we came out with another’ and then the Goonies grew up, and then they came out with their walkers, and then they fell off a cliff because they couldn’t see very well. What are you going to do? I don’t know.”
