The fate of the Twisted Metal TV series has finally been revealed. The show is based on the PlayStation video game of the same name, with the Peacock streaming series adapting the unique cars, their eccentric drivers, and car combat. Twisted Metal stars Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, and Will Arnett, with the second season featuring the explosive tournament that fans were promised. Season 2 wrapped up in August, with viewers eagerly awaiting word of a renewal.
As reported by Deadline, the half-hour action comedy is returning for a third season. Peacock asserts that Twisted Metal Season 2 racked up a staggering “993 million minutes viewed,” making it the “second highest-reaching original returning scripted season.” With numbers like that, a renewal for Twisted Metal makes sense, along with the show’s exceptional reviews, as the second season holds a 92% Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
Twisted Metal Season 3 looks to come with a new showrunner, as Michael Jonathan Smith is stepping away from the series. David Reed, who previously worked on The Boys and The Magicians, is taking the reins of the adaptation. While bringing in a new showrunner following a successful season is always tricky, Reed’s past work aligns with what fans of Twisted Metal hope to see in the coming episodes.
Below are Spoilers for Twisted Metal season 2!
The first season of Twisted Metal promised audiences an epic car combat tournament when it wrapped up, following a season that established the show’s world and numerous characters. The second season delivered on the promise, sending John and Quiet on a season-long path up to and through the event, which produces an unexpected winner and an explosive finale. The season also fleshed out other Twisted Metal characters, seeing Sweet Tooth, Axel, Raven, and Mr. Grimm getting their own engaging stories, as while Mackie and Beatriz are often front and center in promotion, the show’s roster runs deep with talented actors and writers.
While details about the third season’s story remain unknown, the Season 2 finale set the stakes for what’s to come. After the Twisted Metal tournament is bombed, killing spectators in attendance, John and Quiet find themselves framed for the attack by the organizer of the event, Calypso. The bombing is meant to trigger a war between the Insiders and Outsiders, with the series protagonists stuck in the heart of the conflict. Though there is likely to be focus on a variety of characters, like Stu, who won the tournament at the end of season 2, only for things to go south fast.
Twisted Metal will be looking to bring back as many characters as possible, as the show thrives on an ensemble cast of oddball characters. Fan favorites like Sweet Tooth, who is often considered a pseudo-mascot for the video game franchise, are likely to return. However, the third season of Twisted Metal can potentially introduce some new drivers and vehicles, much like they did with Season 2’s additions of Axel and Mr. Grimm.
