Although the Tron franchise has always been riddled with issues, its future has arguably never been this bleak. After a disappointing opening weekend at the box office, Tron: Ares is reportedly heading to a lackluster total that will cost the studio a significant amount of money.
Deadline reports that Tron: Ares, which apparently cost Disney $220 million to produce, is set to lose the studio approximately $132 million when it is all said and done. This has caused industry sources close to Deadline to question Disney’s thought process behind reviving a franchise not known for its box office success (and spending over $200 million to do so). “The idea that Disney would spend a quarter of a billion dollars on a Jared Leto film that is a franchise that hasn’t worked in four decades is insane,” one talent rep told the trade.
