Oxygen is leaning into its true-crime roots with The Death Investigator with Barbara Butcher, and TV Fanatic has an exclusive look at one of the season’s most chilling cases.
In the clip, Barbara Butcher explains how the police received a disturbing call from a passerby who spotted what appeared to be a body floating in Manhattan’s East River near East 85th Street.
Retrieving the body was not as straightforward as it sounds. Initial searches came up empty, heightening the tension and uncertainty, presenting an opportunity for Oxygen to dissect the happenings.

It wasn’t until a helicopter joined the search that the grim discovery was finally made — a body floating in the water.
This scene is just one example of how the series highlights the relentless and often harrowing work of death investigators.

While police secure the crime scene, it is the death investigator who takes jurisdiction over the body. Their findings often contain the key details that unlock the mystery of what truly happened.
Barbara Butcher knows this work better than almost anyone.
Over more than two decades in the field, she has investigated more than 5,500 death scenes, including 680 homicides.
She also lent her expertise to some of the most devastating mass disasters of modern times, including 9/11, the 2004 Thailand tsunami, the London Underground bombing, and the crash of Flight 587.

In The Death Investigator with Barbara Butcher, she breaks down 10 unforgettable cases, ranging from a fearless Las Vegas journalist ambushed outside his home to a harrowing search for the identity of a victim discovered in the East River.
Produced by Wolf Entertainment, Alfred Street Industries, and Universal Television Alternative Studio, the series promises to deliver true-crime storytelling with a level of expertise and humanity rarely seen on television.
