Mattson Tomlin might be working with Matt Reeves on The Batman – Part II, but he also has his sights set on working with Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire on Spider-Man 4. Tomlin is a screenwriter who has worked on films such as Project Power and the Netflix anime series Terminator Zero, and contributed uncredited work to The Batman. Tomlin has been working with Matt Reeves on The Batman – Part II, the sequel to the 2022 film that recently completed a script and is aiming for a 2027 release date.
Following Fathom Pictures’ re-release of Sam Raimi and Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man trilogy, landing in the box office top ten, a fan on X, via The Direct, jokingly said he would pay Mattson Tomlin to write the script for Spider-Man 4, with Tomlinson replying, “Trying!” Tomlin also responded “Trying” to a fan saying that the writer should call director Sam Raimi. This ties back to a post Tomlin made on Jul. 30, 2025, where he pitched his idea for a Spider-Man 4 legacy sequel, saying, “Honestly, right now my main interest in this respect would be to write a Spider-Man 4 where Tobey’s Spider-Man is juggling being a husband and a father. Spider-Man as a father is where I gravitate towards given the last 8 films.”
Could ‘Spider-Man 4’ Actually Happen?
Sam Raimi originally intended to make Spider-Man 4, with the film set for release in May 2011. The film would have featured John Malkovich as The Vulture and Anne Hathaway as Felicia Hardy, though instead of donning the persona of Black Cat, she would have been The Vultress. Sony Pictures canceled the film in 2010 in favor of a reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man. Maguire would later reprise his role as Peter Parker in 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home, while director Sam Raimi joined the MCU with Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Given that both Raimi and Maguire have played around in the MCU, a legacy-sequel continuation of their Spider-Man trilogy seems more realistic than it would have been a decade ago. Raimi himself has spoken about how he would love to make Spider-Man 4.
However, Sony Pictures is focused on another fourth Spider-Man movie, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is set for release on Jul. 31, 2026, and will be the lead-in film for Avengers: Doomsday. One character in the movie rumored to be played by Sadie Sink is Mayday Parker, also known as Spider-Girl, with many suspecting she will be revealed as the daughter of Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker. The strange thing to consider is that, given Spider-Man 3 was released 18 years ago, it is entirely realistic to imagine Tobey Maguire’s Peter Parker now having a teenage daughter.
Tomlin’s pitch for Spider-Man 4, a legacy sequel that would feature Peter Parker as a father, likely to Mayday Parker, is certainly a strong take, one that Sony Pictures could easily build on to create a new, separate Spider-Man spin-off series. Sony Pictures has already scrapped its shared universe plans based on Spider-Man supporting characters, and with Beyond the Spider-Verse set for a 2027 release, the studio is likely planning where to take its own non-MCU Spider-Man films. If Sink is playing the daughter of Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and they could explain the cross-multiverse conotations, that could serve as the starting point for Tomlin to revisit one of the most celebrated superhero film series of all time.
