Raúl Castillo will star alongside Jeffrey Dean Morgan and Lauren Cohan for Season 3 of The Walking Dead: Dead City as a new character named Luis. He joins the cast as a series regular next to fellow TWD Universe newbies, Jimmi Simpson (Westworld), and Aimee Garcia (Lucifer), according to Deadline. Prior to the announcement, Castillo played the role of Cliff Broward in HBO’s hit crime drama Task.
Three months after the Season 2 finale, Dead City began filming its third season in Worcester, Mass., on Sept. 23 — the same day that AMC officially confirmed the popular zombie series had been picked up for more episodes with Seth Hoffman taking over as showrunner.
“I’m excited to have the chance to dive back into ‘The Walking Dead’ Universe and work to deliver another dynamic season’s worth of stories to this epic franchise. It’s a true honor to chart out the next chapter for Maggie and Negan’s iconic adventures in Dead City. Lauren, Jeffrey and Scott [Gimple] are incredible creative partners and I’m thrilled to collaborate with them to bring this story to life.”
Dan McDermott, the president of AMC Networks entertainment and AMC Studios, said he was “delighted” that Hoffman would be at the helm this season as the show brings “new adversaries and alliances” into the mix and continues to “push the boundaries of Maggie (Cohan) and Negan’s (Morgan) conflicted relationship.”
What’s to Come for Maggie and Negan in ‘Dead City’ Season 3
Season 2 left fans on the edge of their seats. Not only did Maggie literally stab Negan in the back, bringing years of tension to a head, but the episode ended with them holed up in a building with Perlie (Gaius Charles) as they awaited an all-out war against the New Babylon forces arriving in Manhattan.
In a June interview with Collider, Cohan suggested Negan and Maggie’s complicated relationship could finally take a more definitive turn in the show’s third season.
“I don’t want to call it a truce, but they have basically beaten each other into submission, so I’d like to see some sort of agreement where, if it’s not to the death, then there is something livable here. That then allows for the show, because they’ve made this decision and they’ve gone to the absolute limit of what you can do in this dynamic, to just shatter open, and everything that we’ve expected and everything that these characters can expect of themselves or of others can be turned on its head. That is what I would like to see. That’s what I hope to do next.”
Cohan also revealed that Season 2 showed glimmers of “hope coming back in” to her strained relationship with her teenage son, Hershel (Logan Kim).
“It’s a learning experience for Maggie because, over these last few seasons and over these years, you see the vision tunneling because of trauma and because of fear of losing the last person she has left … Reaching breaking points like that is always, ultimately, the beginning of a new story and that, to me, is very uplifting despite the other horrible things.”
A premiere date for Season 3 has yet to be announced.
