One of the stars of Supergirl says it is faithful to the DC Comic, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow.” Supergirl is the second film in the DCU, and will star Milly Alcock as the titular hero following her brief cameo at the end of Superman. The movie is adapted from the 2022 Tom King and Bilquis Evely miniseries, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” and even had that as its original title before being changed to simply Supergirl.
David Krumholtz, who is set to play Supergirl’s father Zor-El, spoke with Nerdtropolis about his role in the upcoming DCU film. Fans who were disappointed about how Superman’s parents, Jor-El and Lara Lor-Van, were handled, Krumholtz hinted that some more details about the House of El and the wider Kryptonian culture, revealing, “I’ll just say that I’m thrilled to be the next piece of telling the story of Krypton and further clarifying what the House of El is all about.” Krumholtz then said the movie will stick close to the “Woman of Tomorrow” miniseries, with one major addition:
“It’s very true to the graphic novel that it’s based on, Woman of Tomorrow, very true, which is great. Plus, Lobo, which I can say, everybody knows that Jason Momoa is playing Lobo in it. So, it’s that comic plus Lobo.”
Supergirl will provide an interesting change of pace for the DCU. Whereas projects like Superman and Peacemaker have drawn influence from comics like All-Star Superman and Salvation’s Run, respectively, they are not straightforward adaptations. Instead, they use the comics as inspiration for tone or story ideas that serve as pieces of uniquely original stories to the franchise. Supergirl is being pitched as a directed adaptation of a specific comic, with the major addition of Lobo, who was originally going to appear in the miniseries.
The comic reveals a great deal about Supergirl and her life on Krypton, including her and her father’s time on Argo City adrift in space before being sent to Earth as the city’s last survivor. Supergirl can expand on the shocking revelation that Superman’s birth parents, Jor-El and Lara, sent their son to Earth not as a hero but as a conqueror. This was a controversial change James Gunn made to the Superman mythology, and some fans are still trying to find a way to retcon the revelation, though Gunn is standing by his decision. With Krumholtz playing the younger brother of Bradley Cooper’s Jor-El, it will be interesting to see whether Jor-El’s actions were part of Krypton’s larger culture or if he was a lone individual whose brother held different beliefs.
Supergirl is currently set to open in theaters on Jun. 26, 2026. Many suspect that Supergirl will be attached to Avatar: Fire and Ash, following a similar marketing campaign as Superman, whose first trailer debuted in December 2024. Supergirl will be helmed by Craig Gillespie, who previously directed acclaimed titles like Fright Night, Lars and the Real Girl, and I, Tonya. One of the questions on many fans’ minds before the trailer drops is whether the film will capture the majestic quality of Bilquis Evely’s artwork. If it does, Supergirl certainly has the potential to be one of the most stunning superhero movies ever.
