Sunn O))) have announced a new record deal with Sub Pop and simultaneously released a nearly 30-minute EP, which can be streamed now.
The drone metal act has long operated under the Southern Lord imprint, founded by the band’s own Greg Anderson, though Sunn did participate in Sub Pop’s long-running Singles Club back in 2023 as a prelude to the new signing.
Wasting no time, Sunn have already rolled out their first release as part of the record deal, a three-track “maxi single” (essentially an EP at nearly 30 minutes in length) that’s set for a vinyl release in late 2025. It’s comprised of three distinct drone pieces, the 14-minute “Eternity’s Pillars” on Side A, and B-sides “Raise the Chalice” and “Reverential.”

These tracks were performed by the group’s core duo of Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, with engineering by co-producer Brad Wood at Bear Creek Studios in Woodinville, Washington, and at Sea Grass in Los Angeles earlier this year. Per Sub Pop’s press release, these are the first official Sunn O))) recordings to feature “only the original core duo on heavily saturated electric guitars and synthesis.”
“Sunn O))) gave extreme focus and care to each step and aspect of the recording, each tone and level of saturation, each gain stage and speaker, each arrangement and harmonic,” the band stated in the press release. “The Pacific Northwest forest is our guide.”
Regarding song titles, the press release continued: “‘Eternity’s Pillars’ is named for the mid-1980s television program created and hosted by jazz visionary and spiritual guru Alice Coltrane Turiyasangitananda, focusing on her incessant belief in music’s capacity to attain spiritual transcendence. ‘Raise the Chalice’ is named for a rallying cry often uttered by Northwest legend Ron Guardipee throughout the mid-1990s. ‘Reverential’ equally pays respect and sends loud praise to those who came before us with the heaviest burdens, expressions with music and art being the materials of an antiphon.”
The signing and EP announcement come as Sunn O))) continue their European tour. Dates run through early November, and you can get tickets here.
