The pop-cultural phenomenon that is Netflix’s Stranger Things series will soon be coming to an end. Despite long waits between seasons, ambitious, large-scale productions, and a cast that has blown up in popularity, there’s always been a clear intent from the creators to tell a complete story. Created by Matt and Ross Duffer, the first season of Stranger Things premiered in 2016, and has been a massive success since. Now, the first plot details for the final season of the show have dropped, and it teases an intense final conflict for the core cast of characters.
In TIME magazine’s coverage of Stranger Things and its lasting legacy, there was also a new plot description for the upcoming final season. Marketed as Stranger Things 5, the final season is set to premiere in a little over a month. Consisting of two “volumes,” the first will be released on Netflix on November 26, with the second dropping on December 25. The runtimes of the episodes have also been revealed, with some episodes being practically feature length. Moreover, the new plot details for the final season tease an intense final confrontation with Vecna. The full description can be read below:
“A final boss emerges: Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), a patient from the same lab as Eleven who has grown into a monster and is linked to every creature in the Upside Down through what the characters dub a “hive mind.” At the beginning of Season 5, Vecna has disappeared. The gang must hunt him down while avoiding the military, which has imposed a quarantine to cover up the portal that Vecna opened between the Upside Down and Hawkins.”
‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Is Ambitious in Scale & Production
Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy also provided some insight into the scope of the final season, telling TIME that when he was directing one of the episodes in Stranger Things 5, “the sets were no less ambitious than the ones I used with Marvel. It happens to be a television series, but it’s epic storytelling by any metric.” The report also came with the interesting information that Levy will be directing two episodes in the final season, though which two is not specified. It’s already been confirmed that the Duffer Brothers directed the first and final episodes of the season, so it could very well be the case that Levy was responsible for directing the penultimate episode.
Whatever the case, Levy’s comments about the massive production line up with the exciting plot description for Stranger Things 5. With a portal opened up between the Upside Down and Hawkins, the stage is set for an explosive finale. A lot has been riding on the next and final chapter in the Stranger Things saga, especially since it was first announced to be the conclusion as far back as 2022. With the news of a spin-off on the horizon after the story in Hawkins is completed, there will still be more Stranger Things stories to look forward to even after the fifth and final season of the main series premieres towards the end of November.
