The fifth and final season of Stranger Things, which is finally due to land on Netflix this year, will no doubt have all manner of surprises in store. But the return of a particular fan-favorite character won’t be one of them. While the core characters, including Eleven, Mike, Dustin, Lucas, Will, Jim Hopper, and Joyce Byers, have avoided the reaper so far, Stranger Things has not been afraid of killing off beloved supporting characters. And it sounds like, in the Stranger Things universe, death is final. At least, for some.
Speaking with Empire, Stranger Things co-creator has attempted to confirm the fate of Joseph Quinn’s fan-favorite Eddie Munson once and for all. While many have held out hope that the Dungeons and Dragons aficionado and amateur rockstar will be resurrected somehow following his heroic sacrifice at the end of Season 4, Duffer revealed that the rumors of his death have been underexaggerated, and he’s now “fully under that ground.”
“I love that Joe Quinn is toying with people! But no, he’s dead. Joe is so busy anyway, that everyone should know he’s not coming back. He’s shot like five movies since! When the hell has he got time to come and shoot Stranger Things? No, sadly, RIP. He’s fully under that ground.”
Joseph Quinn has indeed seen his star skyrocket since Stranger Things, with roles in the likes of the MCU’s Avengers sequels and his role as George Harrison in director Sam Mendes’ Beatles biopic on the horizon. However, while Duffer seems adamant that he’s not coming back, there will surely be some Stranger Things fans still holding out hope for a miraculous cameo.
‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 Will “Answer Most Questions and Resolve Every Arc”
Alongside the confirmation that Eddie is definitely, absolutely, unquestionably dead, we also now have our first plot details for Stranger Things Season 5. Following the events of the last season, “Vecna has disappeared. The gang must hunt him down while avoiding the military, which has imposed a quarantine to cover up the portal that Vecna opened between the Upside Down and Hawkins.” While spin-offs have since been teased, fellow Stranger Things creator Ross Duffer has put minds at ease, revealing that the fifth season will “answer most questions and resolve every arc.”
While Joseph Quinn may be dead and done, the final season of Stranger Things sees several familiar faces return, including Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Noah Schnapp, Sadie Sink, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Brett Gelman, Cara Buono, and Jamie Campbell Bower. The Terminator star Linda Hamilton is also set to join the fray as the villainous Dr. Kay.
Stranger Things Season 5 is due to be released on Netflix in three parts. The first part will contain four episodes and is set to debut on November 26, 2025, followed by the second with three episodes on December 25, and lastly the series finale on December 31.
