While Peacemaker might be an emotionally charged show, it also has plenty of hilarious moments, thanks in part to the trusty John Economos, who always finds a way to break the tension.
In the newest season of Peacemaker, Economos finds himself pitted against his friends as he works for ARGUS under the command of Rick Flag Jr.
Steve Agee delivers a standout performance in this superhero show, bringing Economos to life in a unique way that makes him a vital part of tying the DCU together.
Agee, who has extensive experience in comedy, first joined the DC Universe as Economos in James Gunn’s reboot of Suicide Squad and was later included in the ensemble cast of Peacemaker.
In this exclusive interview, Agee reflected on his experience working on Peacemaker Season 2 and his future hopes for the DC Universe.
Being more involved in action scenes this season allowed Agee to engage in more intense encounters on set, although it resulted in an unfortunate injury.
When shooting the scene of getting attacked by Auggie, he recalled feeling something in his ribs snap. Although his ribs thankfully weren’t broken, it was still a painful injury to sustain.
“It’s much easier sitting at a desk goofing around with Tim Meadows,” Agee remarked.
Meadows and Agee shared plenty of screentime as their characters were coworkers. But he also fondly regarded his time with Nhut Le, who plays Judomaster, and Sol Rodríguez, who plays Sasha Bordeaux.
“I would love to do more stuff on the show with Judomaster,” Agee said. “His character really developed more, not just during this season, but even just in Episode 7.”
Still, Economos’s closest friends are the 11th Street Kids, which include Peacemaker, Emilia Harcourt, Leota Adebayo, and Vigilante.
In fact, the first scene Agee shot for the newest season was the party on the roof at Harcourt’s place during Peacemaker Season 2 Episode 2.
“It was the first time we’d all been together in a couple of years, so that was really special.”
Throughout the season, Economos must balance working for an organization that aims to dismantle Peacemaker with his loyalty to his friends.
“The bright side of that is he can protect Peacemaker and give him hints and warnings,” Agee explained. “But I think in the end, given a choice, Economos would choose his friends over the job.”
This dedication to his friends certainly shines through when Economos goes through a portal into an alternate world to help save his friends.
Agee was particularly excited when he first read that Peacemaker was expanding into an alternate universe in the Season 2 scripts.
“I was hoping there was another John Economos, and I’m sure there probably is in that world. But it was really exciting to see this and know that our whole universe has opened up to a much bigger place.”
More importantly, Peacemaker is just one piece of the new DC Universe, which seems to be expanding with new movies and shows slated for the coming years.
Agee expressed having a great time on the animated show Creature Commandos and being a stand-in for King Shark on the Suicide Squad set.
As for future appearances, he said, “I would love to see Economos in a Superman. It seems like it would never work, but I’m sure James could figure out a way.”
While Batman has yet to officially enter this new DCU, Agee has also expressed interest in portraying Economos in a potential Batman movie.
Like most things in the DC Universe, Peacemaker Season 2 was under the close supervision of writer and creator James Gunn, who made music a large part of the show’s DNA.
The cast received playlists along with the scripts for each episode to help them become fully immersed in the show.
“I really grew to love the new theme song,” Agee commented. “Maybe it’s because we had to hear it so many times over the few days that we were shooting that dance number. It was so embedded in my head that I couldn’t stop singing it when I was home.”
He also enjoyed the inclusion of the song “November Rain” by Guns N’ Roses on the soundtrack and pointed to Bowie as a potential artist he’d like to see featured on the show’s soundtrack one day.
As of now, Peacemaker has yet to be confirmed for a Season 3, but with the positive reception from fans during the latest season, people are absolutely rooting to see more of the beloved 11th Street Kids in the future.
The final episode of Peacemaker Season 2 is available to stream on HBO Max.
