A new adventure awaits on other planets — just on the other side of the Stargate. Prime Video is reviving the Stargate universe with a new ongoing series created by writer Martin Gero, continuing the franchise that began with the MGM-released 1994 movie, starring Kurt Russell and James Spader.
Plot details about the new show are under wraps, per The Hollywood Reporter, but it will likely involve the titular devices, scattered across the universe by an ancient alien race, that connect planets via wormhole. Following the Roland Emmerich-directed film, Stargate became a sci-fi TV empire with the long-running Stargate SG-1, the slightly less long-running Stargate Atlantis, and the short-lived Stargate Universe, which concluded in 2011. (Stargate Atlantis gets the credit for introducing Jason Momoa to audiences who didn’t watch Baywatch: Hawaii.)
The franchise has been dormant since 2011, but as far as revivals go, Stargate is actually a strong option, as the nature of the underlying premise leaves a lot of story possibilities open. Gero, who will serve as showrunner as well as creator, is also well-suited for the challenge: Not only did he recently oversee the NBC revival of Quantum Leap, but he worked on all three of the original series, with Stargate: Atlantis being his first “real job in television.”

“Stargate taught me everything about making television — it’s written into my DNA,” Gero said in a statement. “I’m beyond thrilled that Amazon MGM Studios has entrusted me with guiding this incredible franchise into its next phase. For those who’ve kept the gate active through conventions, rewatches, and unwavering faith — this one’s for you. And for those that are new to our world, I promise you’re in for something extraordinary.”
What that means won’t be revealed for some time. In the meantime, all three Stargate series are currently streaming on Prime Video.
