Mark Wahlberg and Michelle Monaghan are getting back into the family way for Apple TV+, with a first look at their return in The Family Plan 2. The sequel to the 2023 record-breaking action comedy is likely to be another huge draw when the film lands on November 21, just in time for Thanksgiving viewing, but with a story that could see it become Apple TV’s big festive movie as well.
The first images show Wahlberg and Monaghan as Dan and Jessica Morgan, along with Zoe Colletti, Van Crosby, Peter Lindsey, Theodore Lindsey, and Reda Elazoura, as well as teasing Kit Harrington as the “mystery figure” from Dan’s past that draws him into another action-packed situation. The full synopsis for the movie reads:
“In “The Family Plan 2,” it’s the holiday season and Dan (Mark Wahlberg) has planned the perfect vacation for his wife Jessica (Michelle Monaghan) and their kids to celebrate overseas—until a mysterious figure from his past (Kit Harington) shows up with unfinished business. An international game of cat-and-mouse ensues as Dan and his family battle, bicker, and bond their way through a series of bank heists, holiday hijinks, and car chases amid scenic European terrain.”
‘The Family Plan’ Was a Huge Hit, but Not With Critics
The Family Plan was a movie that came with a pleasing combination of star-lead, popular action/comedy plot, and a release date that capitalized on families being at home for the holidays. This all saw the film debut at the top of the Apple TV+ chart around the world, and secured it a place as the most watched original movie on the platform.
In The Family Plan, directed by David Coggeshall, Wahlberg plays Dan Morgan, an exemplary father and a hard-working man who loves his quiet life in the suburbs. However, he hides a dark past. He is a former hitman who used to work for the government eliminating dangerous threats. When the ghosts of his past return to haunt him, he must try to keep his family safe, even when his wife and kids have no idea what he is hiding.
The Family Plan only scored 29% with critics on Rotten Tomatoes, with an overall sense that the movie forgot the comedy part of its “action-comedy” listing, and ended up missing many opportunities to be a great movie thanks to its “dull characters and even duller plot.” Viewers, and there were many of them, didn’t exactly disagree, gifting it a divided 60% rating and noting that at most it was “an alright movie for a one-time watch.”
Whether the sequel can overcome the issues of the first movie is pretty much irrelevant when even movies with hugely disappointing reviews score massive viewership across the main streaming platforms. However, fans of Wahlberg – who adds to his other 2025 releases of Flight Plan and Play Dirty – will no doubt be in their element next month when the movie bursts onto Apple TV+.
