‘Scrubs’ Officially Replaces Dr. Kelso After 25 Years

Warning! Spoilers ahead for the Scrubs revival Season 2, Episode 6, “My Halloween.”The Scrubs revival has reunited an impressive portion of the original cast, allowing the sitcom’s new era to feel spookily like its golden age. As the revival has progressed, the holes left by the absentees have been filled with new faces who have similar roles. For example, the passing of Sam Lloyd meant Ted has been unable to return, but Sibby (Vanessa Bayer) has been a great replacement.

Still, the looming absence of Dr. Kelso (Ken Jenkins) has been hard to ignore. He appeared in all nine seasons of the original run, but Jenkins’ retirement from acting has meant his character hasn’t been involved in either season of the revival so far. The most recent episode, “My Halloween,” finally admits that Scrubs has a missing piece that needs to be addressed. Kelso himself hasn’t returned, but it’s clear the revival’s newest cast member has been tasked with succeeding Jenkins.

Why Cassie Simmons Is the New Dr. Kelso

    ABC

What the Scrubs revival has been missing so far is a boss looming over everyone who seems approachable at a glance, but then it turns out there’s more than meets the eye. Dr. Kelso is the originator of that role. As Sacred Heart’s Chief of Medicine, his bright and cheery demeanor often lulled his staff into a false sense of security before they found themselves insulted and/or having their somewhat reasonable requests turned down.

As Kelso himself often admitted during his more candid moments, it wasn’t his job to be liked. It wasn’t even his job to give the doctors and nurses what they wanted. Most of the time, he was just trying to balance the books so that the hospital could continue to treat patients at all. He did care; it was just that he could lose sight of treating those in need because he was drowning in paperwork and other admin.

This feeling of having such a stern and difficult authority figure in charge of everything hasn’t been part of the Scrubs revival so far. I’m sure Dr. Cox (John C. McGinley) followed suitably in Kelso’s footsteps in this regard, but he stepped aside so quickly to make room for JD (Zach Braff) that we barely got to see him as Chief. Conversely, making JD the constant pseudo-villain that Kelso and Cox were as Chief would have hurt his character.

Finally, 15 episodes in, the debut of Cassie Simmons (Stephanie Koenig) makes up for the gaping, Kelso-shaped void that was just waiting for someone to arrive. Although she isn’t the Chief of Medicine, or even a doctor, Sacred Heart’s new Hospital Administrator bears almost every trait Kelso did during his time in charge. In her first episode, it becomes quickly apparent that she’s a wolf in sheep’s clothing, but one who’s simply doing her job – just like Jenkins’ beloved Scrubs character.

Cassie Isn’t Just a Dr. Kelso Replacement

Zach Braff as JD in Scrubs talking to Stephanie Koenig as Cassie Simmons ABC

Sure, primarily, Cassie is a blatant stand-in for Kelso. That isn’t all she is, though. In addition to becoming JD’s new boss, she’s also teased to be something of a love interest for him. Despite the awkward first exchange that doubled as an offbeat meet-cute, there’s obviously a spark between the two characters. Furthermore, with JD now being single again due to Charlie’s (Rachel Bilson) inability to adapt to the demands of his job, someone who works in medicine like Cassie seems like a good match for Braff’s character.

That being said, with Cassie already clashing with Elliot (Sarah Chalke), any romantic pursuit of Cassie by JD could lead to some serious tension. Elliot has already accused JD of favoritism by choosing Turk’s (Donald Faison) ideas over hers, so imagine how hurt she’ll feel if JD starts dating the woman who killed Elliot’s mobile free clinic idea. It’ll be really interesting to see how this plays out.

Cassie’s Introduction Doesn’t Necessarily Mean Dr. Kelso Can’t Return Eventually

Members of the Scrubs cast and crew have already said that those waiting for Kelso to show up in the revival should temper their expectations. At 86 years old, Jenkins hasn’t acted since 2019. It’s not really a surprise that he hasn’t factored into the sitcom’s comeback tour. That said, I suppose it’s not totally impossible that he could show up for a brief cameo at some point. Again, this isn’t confirmed; it’s just speculation at this point.

Zach Braff has semi-jokingly said that the Scrubs revival will run for five years. If this becomes a reality, even if Cassie sticks around for the duration, it’s not like an appearance from Kelso would step on her toes. After he stepped down from being Chief of Medicine, Kelso softened considerably. Plus, he no longer has any authority when it comes to how the hospital is run. The most he can contribute in this respect is perhaps offering advice to JD, Cassie, or even both of them.

Therefore, there is plenty of room for both Cassie and Kelso to co-exist, even if only briefly. Of course, Cassie’s introduction could mean the end of keeping our fingers crossed for a Kelso cameo at all. She seems like a well-written character who slots right into the formula, so I wouldn’t be totally torn up about this. If this is the case, I hope Kelso at least gets mentioned before the Scrubs revival ends so we know what he got up to after the original series.
