Disney recently resurrected its canceled live-action remake of Tangled, with Scarlett Johansson reportedly eyed for a major role in the film – but is the beloved MCU hero about to become an iconic Disney villain? The actress is perhaps best known for her role as Natasha Romanoff, aka Black Widow, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with her last on-screen appearance as the character being in her superhero’s self-titled solo film in 2021, but she might be about to re-team with the House of Mouse for an entirely new project. Her name has long been rumored for the role of Mother Gothel in the company’s Rapunzel-centric reimagining.
A report earlier this month claimed that Johansson was in talks to star as the manipulative matriarch in the live-action Tangled remake, which has now resumed early development. Mother Gothel is arguably one of the most evil characters within Disney’s gallery of animated antagonists, as the vanity-obsessed older woman steals baby Rapunzel and isolates her in a tower, while exploiting the healing magic and anti-aging properties in her hair. If there is anyone who “knows best” about whether Johansson will be taking on the role, it’s Johansson herself, so ETOnline recently asked her about the possibility. She acknowledged that “anything is possible” before sharing what would excite her most about getting involved with this project, in particular:
“What would excite me about it would be the opportunity to work with Michael Gracey, who is attached to direct the film. He is just absolutely an extraordinary visionary, and any actor would love to have a collaboration with him.”
