Sara Bareilles stops by to talk with Kyle Meredith about Come See Me in the Good Light, the new Apple TV documentary she executive produced alongside Brandi Carlile. The film follows poet laureate Andrea Gibson and their wife Megan Falley through an incurable cancer diagnosis. Listen above or wherever you get your podcasts.
Bareilles talks about how she stumbled into Andrea’s final Colorado shows, how the project arrived at a moment when she was struggling with loss herself, and how the film’s combination of humor and heartbreak felt almost cosmically timed. Once she came onboard the project, she learned just how deeply Andrea intended to let the camera in. “I didn’t realize the plan was, ‘You’re going to film my death,’” she explains, adding that the gravity of that didn’t diminish the joy and electricity Andrea brought to the stage.
She also walks Kyle through the unusual process of writing the film’s original song — starting not with a blank page but with Andrea’s own couplets. “It was like getting carte blanche with this pile of incredible poetry,” Bareilles says, noting that she drafted the first version before sending it to Carlile, whose “sage advice” helped shape the final track.
Bareilles also opens up about her upcoming album — her first since 2019 — which was shaped by the same period of grief that made Andrea’s work feel like a lifeline. “This whole record is my attempt at processing loss,” she says, revealing that Andrea’s voice even appears on one of the songs. She talks about how the pandemic reordered her priorities, how comedy on Girls5Eva unexpectedly became “life-saving,” and why she’s finally feeling ready to get back on the road. “I just care about making music that matters to me,” she says. “And hopefully it brings someone else comfort, too.”
