Sammy Hagar and Alex Van Halen haven’t been on talking phrases in 21 years, and the Crimson Rocker has a pair theories as to why the drummer is upset with him, with one being jealousy.
Hagar not too long ago launched the brand new single “Encore, Thank You, Goodnight,” impressed by a dream he had about Eddie Van Halen. Alex then fully ignored the Van Hagar years of Van Halen in his 2024 memoir, Brothers, with Hagar insisting that not mentioning that period of the band was “blasphemy” to Eddie Van Halen’s legacy.
Now, in a brand new dialog with Rolling Stone, Hagar mentioned, “I dreamt about Alex the opposite evening, man. It was loopy. And it was so friggin’ actual. I used to be saying, ‘What are you pissed off at me about, man? What the fuck? Now simply inform me what your drawback is. What did I do? Simply inform me.’”
When the interviewer advised that the feud could also be as a result of Hagar detailed “the worst interval of Eddie’s life” in his personal 2011 memoir, Crimson: My Uncensored Life in Rock, Hagar dismissed that notion.
“I don’t assume that’s it,” responded Hagar, “And I’ve had this dialog with a couple of folks, together with [former Van Halen manager] Irving Azoff. I’ve requested him, ‘What’s the issue?’ And a few folks have mentioned to me, ‘Oh, Cabo Wabo. At one time, Van Halen, whenever you constructed it, you guys had been all companions in that. After which they didn’t need it anymore when it was shedding cash, and so they gave it to you, and also you turned it round and made lots of of tens of millions of {dollars} on it. They usually’re indignant. Alex is indignant about that.’”
He added, “To that I mentioned, ‘How the fuck may they be indignant about that? They gave me the rattling factor, they walked out on me, left me with it. They usually made me indemnify them in case I obtained sued and misplaced all the things. They made me log out large time.’ And I’m going, ‘I hope it’s not that.’”
For his half, Hagar thinks it has extra to do with the truth that he’s nonetheless recording music and taking part in exhibits, whereas Alex has been comparatively inactive for the previous decade or so.
“I believe Al’s indignant as a result of I’m out doing it, and [bassist] Mike [Anthony] and I are out doing it, and he can’t,” surmised Hagar. “He’s not a singer. He’s not a guitar participant. He isn’t actually a band chief. And he looks like he doesn’t wish to play drums or can’t play drums anymore, and he can’t go write a brand new report. Alex wasn’t the songwriter within the band. He was the drummer. Eddie and I wrote the songs. Dave and Eddie wrote the songs, and so we are able to exit and do them.”
He continued, “I believe that basically bothers him that Mike and I are nonetheless on the market doing it. I might really feel unhealthy. If I put myself in his footwear, I might really feel horrible if I couldn’t do it anymore. However I’m the happiest man out of all of them. That pisses folks off in itself. Being too glad, folks don’t like that.”
The interviewer then talked about that Alex’s bitterness may do with latest well being points which have prevented him from performing, in addition to Eddie’s passing in October 2020. Hagar answered, “Yeah, I’d say so. And I’m okay with it. Al, you’re positive. Simply go away me alone. I’ll go away you alone. All the pieces’s good. I’m making you cash, by the way in which, Al. I’m on the market promoting Van Halen data and retaining the title alive, retaining the music alive.”
