If you love slow, well-thought build-ups, then Onida’s “Apologies” will feel like heaven. The song is taken from the German soulful r&b singer’s debut album Blue Light Nights, which was release last Friday. A homage to the late night alt r&b sound championed by artists like Sevdaliza, Kelela and ABRA, the song will have you in a chokehold.
Built on wide-open chords, a groovy subtle bassline, and crisp percussive details, the track moves with an elaquent elegance between exposed emotion and a subtle, unshakable defiance. A track (and album) to play at 2AM on a misty November evening. I had the pleasure of delving in the full album and once could sense those tracks were written in the small hours of the day. Intimacy pours out of every single composition, making this whole experience extremely personal.
