Oneohtrix Point Never, the project of producer, multi-instrumentalist, and composer Daniel Lopatin, has announced a new album, Tranquilizer, out on November 17th via Warp Records. He’s also revealed three new songs: “For Residue,” “Bumpy,” and “Lifeworld.”
For his 11th album, Lopatin took inspiration from discovering that a large slate of ’90s-era sample CDs had disappeared from the Internet Archive; he took it upon himself to salvage, recreate, and re-contextualize these sounds, commenting on the past and the future at once. Speaking about Tranquilizer, Lopatin said in a press release, “It’s a record shaped by commercial audio construction kits from a bygone era — an index of cliches turned inside out. It is a return to a process-oriented form of music making for me that I felt best evoked a certain kind of madness and ennui in the heart of culture today.”
As a preview for Tranquilizer, Oneohtrix Point Never has revealed not one, but three singles. “Lifeworld” arrives with a trippy music video featuring a collage of short clips that evoke both nostalgia and existentialism; “For Residue” features an ominous, percussion-less soundscape that is equally jarring as it is comforting; and “Bumpy” brings lush synths, chimes, and other ethereal notes to its dream-like composition.
