Osgood Perkins’ next project has entered production, and the company in charge of the release has posted an image from day one of shooting. Fans of the prolific filmmaker behind Longlegs and The Monkey will be getting his next movie, Keeper, in just a couple of weeks, but he already has another project lined up. Perkins is now filming The Young People, a horror thriller featuring The Summer I Turned Pretty newcomer Lola Tung and How to Train Your Dragon star Nico Parker.
The start of production on The Young People was made by Neon on their Instagram account. The image was reposted by Tung, who is also set to lead a feature-length film based on her wildly popular Prime Video series. The post features the actor smiling and leaning over a blood-filled bathtub, officially dropping a hint that The Young People will be as unhinged as some of Perkins’ previous horror movies.
The press release teases “a bad trip by Osgood Perkins,” and reveals that the release date will be in 2026. The Young People is executive produced by Perkins along with his frequent collaborators Brian Kavanaugh-Jones and Chris Ferguson. Neon will once again handle distribution (domestic and international), following up on the first-look deal they signed with Perkins and his production company Phobos.
Osgood Perkins Is an Unstoppable Horror Auteur at His Peak
It might be hard to believe, but the film that shot Perkins into the Hollywood spotlight was released a little more than a year ago. Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe, was Perkins’ take on the serial killer movie that transcends into the territory of demonic horror. The film was a huge hit, grossing $128 million from a $10 million budget, and earning an 86% score on Rotten Tomatoes. It was a significant success, both for Perkins and the distributing studio, as Longlegs became the highest-grossing independent film of 2024, and a commercial triumph for Neon, which mostly focuses on indie productions.
A few months later, Perkins and Neon followed up with The Monkey, a Stephen King adaptation that saw the director play around with the difficult comedy-horror subgenre. The result was a hilarious and gory comedy that became a hit with audiences and critics, grossing more than $68 million from an $11 million budget, and landing a Rotten Tomatoes score of 77%. The Monkey was also a memorable contribution to the library of King adaptations, which, by 2025, has already featured projects like The Life of Chuck, The Long Walk, and The Institute.
What many didn’t imagine was that Perkins was already cooking up his next project, Keeper. Starring The Monkey‘s Tatiana Maslany, the film sees a couple heading on a weekend getaway and facing a supernatural entity. It’s not common that a director releases two films in the same year, something that speaks highly of Neon’s trust in the auteur behind The Blackcoat’s Daughter and Gretel & Hansel. It’s also evidence of Perkins’ ability to deliver original horror in an industry that’s already saturated with franchises, sequels, and reboots. Will he ever take a break? Hopefully not.
