Netflix’s smash-hit Chris Hemsworth action thriller franchise, Extraction, is already getting one spin-off in the upcoming Mercenary led by Lupin and The Killer star Omar Sy. Which is already exciting enough. But now, the news of another spin-off, this time a movie led by one of the most underrated action heroes in the game, has arrived to increase our excitement levels to dangerous levels.
Joining the Extraction franchise alongside Hemsworth is MCU alum Ma Dong-seok, aka Don Lee. Best known for roles in the Marvel outing Eternals, as well as Train to Busan, and The Roundup series, Lee will take the lead in the spin-off, which is titled Extraction: Taigo. The action star will join forces with The Roundup franchise director Lee Sang-yong and writer Cha Woo-jin, with Squid Game’s Lee Jin-wook also set to star.
Following in the footsteps of Hemsworth’s Tyler Rake, Lee too will take the lead as “a mercenary who undertakes a dangerous mission to rescue a kidnapped comrade,” the synopsis reveals. Extraction: Taigo will reportedly begin filming this month (via What’s on Netflix).
Adding Ma Dong-seok to the Extraction franchise is a masterstroke, with the actor having proven both his affinity for action and his engagingly bulky screen presence time and again. Possessing one of the most powerful punches ever committed to the silver screen, action fans would be wise to add Extraction: Taigo to their “must-see” list as quickly as possible.
Following the release of the first Extraction back in 2020, which proved to be a major hit for the streamer, the future of the series is looking very bright indeed. Alongside Extraction: Taigo, a spin-off series titled Mercenary is also now in the works. Starring Omar Sy, the series will follow another mercenary “as he navigates a dangerous mission to rescue hostages in Libya. Trapped between warring factions and ruthless killers, the series delves into the emotional struggles of conflicted and flawed characters, each facing trauma, betrayal, and life-or-death choices.” The series has already amassed an impressive cast alongside Sy, with Logan star Boyd Holdbrook and Game of Thrones’ Natalie Dormer set to join the fray. Mercenary is expected to debut on Netflix next year.
Meanwhile, following his debut as Tyler Rake and his return in 2023’s Extraction 2, Chris Hemsworth is all set to charge into danger once again in Extraction 3. While details largely remain under wraps, returning director Sam Hargrave recently revealed that the third outing is due to start filming in 2026…
“The plan is to turn over in 2026. […] We’ll roll cameras in 2026, we’ll see how it goes. A lot of it’s based on his schedule with Avengers, which has a lot of moving parts, but that’s the plan, to shoot in ’26 and I’m assuming the release will be some time in 2027. But, of course, I can neither officially confirm or deny these dates! [laughs]”
