The trailer for Monarch: Legacy of Monsters has suggested a kaiju lost for over 60 years is about to be revived for the upcoming second season of the MonsterVerse series. Last week, fans were finally given a first glimpse at the return of the incredible series based on the Godzilla and Kong franchise.
The new series features brief glimpses of many new monsters coming to screens in February 2026, along with the arrival of Kong in the highly anticipated Apple TV series. Among them, is a tentacled beast that many believe is the Toho kaiju, Oodako, the Giant Octopus last seen in 1962’s King Kong vs. Godzilla movie. This is something that has been supported by the series’ description, including a line about “a mysterious village where a mythical Titan rises from the sea.”
Oodako was seen attacking Faro Island in the classic Toho movie, seeking out the island natives’ special berry juice they use in their rituals. The creature is seen launching its attack on the island before Kong steps in to defeat the rival monster. In 1966, Oodako appeared briefly, taking down a fishing trawler at the beginning of the movie The War of the Gargatuas. The monster has not been seen since and was never seen as more than a side threat. Its inclusion in Monarch could finally give one of the most underused creatures in the entire Godzilla franchise its time to shine.
‘Monarch: Legacy of Monsters’ Will Finally Return in 2026
Fans of the MonsterVerse were given something they never expected to see in 2023, when Apple TV teamed up with Legendary to bring Godzilla to the small screen in a big way. Looking every bit as polished as its theatrical counterparts, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters took a few liberties with the history of Godzilla, but delivered a compelling, human-driven story that kept its kaiju appearances small in number but big on quality.
Now, we are only a few months from seeing the series return for a second season. The show runs adjacent to some events from the MonsterVerse’s movies, featuring time travel, the Hollow Earth, and, in the final moments of Season 1, Kong. The next season will feature more of the giant ape, as well as introducing several more gargantuan beasts, seemingly including some from Toho’s rich history of Godzilla movies. The season synopsis reads:
“Season two will pick up with the fate of Monarch — and the world — hanging in the balance. The dramatic saga reveals buried secrets that reunite our heroes (and villains) on Kong’s Skull Island, and a new, mysterious village where a mythical Titan rises from the sea. The ripple effects of the past make waves in the present day, blurring the bonds between family, friend and foe — all with the threat of a titan event on the horizon.”
Monarch: Legacy of Monster Season 2 will star Anna Sawai, Kiersey Clemons, Ren Watabe, Mari Yamamoto, Joe Tippett and Anders Holm. Kurt and Wyatt Russell will also return, sharing the role of Lee Shaw, with Kurt playing the elder version of the character.
