Modern scream queen Samara Weaving has addressed whether she would like to take over the role of Harley Quinn in James Gunn’s DCU, and she believes that Margot Robbie would leave some big shoes to fill.
One big question many DCU fans still want answering is whether we will ever see Margot Robbie return as Quinn. The character was last seen as part of James Gunn’s precursor to his appointment as DC Studios’ co-CEO, The Suicide Squad. As that movie seems to be set in the same universe as Gunn’s main DCU stories, then it seems likely that Quinn’s return would bring Robbie back to screens as her mischievous and just a little psychotic alter-ego.
However, there are plenty of fans who believe that Weaving could be perfect for the role when the time comes for a recast, and while Gunn has previously said that he would love to work with Robbie again, it is possible that he may seek out a new actress to play Quinn in the future. It seems, though, that Weaving is aware of just how tough an act Robbie would be to follow. She told Who Let Us Out on Instagram:
“Really? I mean, sure. Big shoes to fill though… Maggie really knocked it out of the park. I don’t know if I can blow Mags in that.”
Will Margot Robbie Reprise Her Role as Harley Quinn?
After playing Harley Quinn in both David Ayer’s Suicide Squad and James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, as well as in her own movie Birds of Prey, it seemed that Margot Robbie’s role could continue in the DCU. However, even with the connection between Suicide Squad and Peacemaker showing that both stories take place within the DCU, Robbie previously revealed that she has heard nothing about potentially returning to the superhero franchise. Back in August, she told Variety:
“I’ve heard nothing. You can’t get sick of Harley. I love her so deeply. I always had high hopes for her, like Batman… a character that lives on long after I’ve had a go at it. I feel like I need to share Harley.”
The subject of whether Robbie will be the DCU’s Harley Quinn is something that has been brought up with James Gunn on several occasions. Around the same time as Robbie’s comments, Gunn was quoted as saying, “That will be revealed down the line,” when asked about whether there would be a recast of Quinn.
So far, only a handful of characters have been confirmed to have crossed over from the old DCEU, and almost all of them are characters associated with projects that originated with Gunn, other than Blue Beetle. For this reason, it is still hard to rule out Robbie still being Harley Quinn when the time for her DCU appearance comes around. For now, there is no indication of when and where Quinn could actually make her first appearance in the new franchise, but with several Batman projects coming down the line, it is needless to say that we will see her back on screens at some point in the next several years.
