Sinners was nothing short of a box office phenomenon. Delivering an original concept (not relying on franchise backing), the movie raked in a whopping $367 million worldwide and $279 million domestically, the fifth highest at the box office in Canada and the US. Indeed, fans found the subtle themes explored and the mash-up of genres the perfect vampiric tale to sink their teeth into in theaters.
For actor Michael B. Jordan, he is no stranger to striking theatrical gold, and Sinners marks the actor’s most significant box-office success in the lead role. While this may seem like a high bar, rumors suggest an upcoming role could set a new box-office record for Michael B. Jordan as a leading man: the forthcoming Miami Vice reboot. Here is what we know about Jordan’s potential involvement and why it could be a box-office behemoth.
Michael B. Jordan Is Rumored To Star in the ‘Miami Vice’ Reboot
Michael B. Jordan is one of the most talented and skilled actors working today, with an impressive filmography to back it up. It is no surprise that filmmaker Joseph Kosinski of the upcoming reboot is a fan as well, having spoken at the Hamilton Behind the Camera Awards that “Michael is someone I’ve admired for a long time, [and] always wanted to work with him” (Variety Australia). Kosinski also mentioned wanting Austin Butler to co-star in the same interview.
Variety reports that Jordan is in talks to star as Ricardo ‘Rico’ Tubbs, one-half of the iconic Miami Vice detective duo alongside James ‘Sonny’ Crockett. While not yet confirmed, Jordan is an ideal fit for the project, one with great potential to see him in another position as a box-office draw that could outdo Sinners. Of course, Jordan’s involvement would be just one factor that assures the action film’s success.
How ‘Miami Vice’ Could Become Michael B. Jordan’s Biggest Box Office Success
The original run of Miami Vice (1984–1990) and its movie reboot are sure to capture the attention of those who grew up with the standout ’80s police procedural. Of course, nostalgia can only get a film so far, but the project has a proven action director to back it up in Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski has delivered a series of critically acclaimed box-office action hits, including Top Gun: Maverick and F1: The Movie, the latter of which overtook Sinners as the highest-grossing original film of 2025.
With Joseph Kosinski at the helm, delivering the pulse-pounding, highly realistic action sequences he has become known for, combined with the name value of Miami Vice, the movie is a sure thing in an industry where that claim is becoming increasingly uncertain. Of course, we don’t know the direction the movie will take yet, but if it drenches itself in the era’s neon and synths, it can also appeal to a more niche audience.
Miami Vice has become synonymous with a particular aesthetic that has continued to thrive in other media, with the era finding much love in modern music and video games, which are immersed in its visuals and sounds. We can’t say that the film will take this approach and aim for that stylized cool, but we can certainly hope (get Gunship and The Weekend on the soundtrack, please!). Regardless, with Joseph Kosinski directing, the film is sure to be entertaining. Now we need confirmation that Michael B. Jordan will, in fact, join the cast, creating the perfect pairing and a potential box-office record setter. The upcoming Miami Vice reboot is set for a theatrical release on August 6, 2027.
