10 years after it first opened in theaters, Ridley Scott and Matt Damon’s epic sci-fi thriller is about to land on a new streaming platform. Ridley Scott has already delivered some of the best sci-fi movies of the 20th century with the likes of Alien and Blade Runner. But in 2015, he returned to the genre to deliver another masterpiece. This time, Scott assembled one of his best casts to date, which included Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Sebastian Stan, Jeff Daniels, Sean Bean, Benedict Wong, and Mackenzie Davis. The film in question is none other than The Martian, and it’s about to take one small leap onto a new streaming home.

The Martian will soon stream on Peacock. Ridley Scott and Matt Damon’s sci-fi thriller will be available to stream on Peacock on December 1. The Martian is adapted from the Andy Weir novel of the same name (the author behind Ryan Gosling’s upcoming sci-fi film, Project Hail Mary). Damon stars as Mark Watney, a NASA botanist who’s part of a mission to collect samples from Mars. But, when his team presumes him dead after a dust storm and flees the planet, Mark must survive on his own on the Red Planet, while trying to re-establish contact with NASA. It’s a brutal, (mostly) scientifically accurate, tale of survival against the odds. The official synopsis reads:

“When astronauts blast off from the planet Mars, they leave behind Mark Watney, presumed dead after a fierce storm. With only a meager amount of supplies, the stranded visitor must utilize his wits and spirit to find a way to survive on the hostile planet. Meanwhile, back on Earth, members of NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crew mates hatch their own plan for a daring rescue mission.”

As well as being one of the best movies of both Ridley Scott and Matt Damon’s filmography, The Martian was also a gigantic box office success. Against a budget of roughly $108 million, the film grossed well over $630 million during its theatrical run. The Martian has also been a big success on streaming, racing up the streaming charts on whichever platform it touched down on. Expect it to rank highly on Peacock when it lands on the streamer on December 1.

    ‘The Martian’ Is a “Must-See” Sci-Fi Thriller

Matt Damon as an astronaut in The Martian 20th Century Fox

To call The Martian a success would be an understatement. As well as its high box office gross, the movie also received rave reviews from both audiences and critics. The Martian holds a joint 91% critics and audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 10 years later, audiences are still obsessed with The Martian, like this RT user, who wrote, “Exciting, heartwarming, humorous, basically real, even though the book on which it is based is science fiction. Matt Damon and the rest give wonderful performances. Not surprising. A must-see!”

As well as being a science-heavy sci-fi thriller, The Martian is also an incredibly captivating and moving story of one man’s survival and desperation to return home. For some, that story even brought a tear to their eye, like this user, who wrote, “Any movie that makes me shed a tear gets an automatic 5 stars. Its simplicity is refreshing.”
