Ahead of his big screen debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Jon Bernthal is set to lead his own MCU special on Disney+. The highly anticipated project was filmed earlier this year, and while details have been scarce, it already sounds like it will be tailor-made for longtime fans of The Punisher. While he got his own two-season Netflix series nearly seven years ago, this will be the first solo project explicitly set in the MCU. And yes, don’t worry, it’s going to be as brutal (and emotional) as fans hoped it would be.
While on the Phase Hero podcast, Brad Winderbaum, Head of Television at Marvel Studios, teased the upcoming Punisher special, which features some Oscar-winning talent and a heavy dose of Bernthal. The untitled Marvel Studios Special Presentation was written by Bernthal alongside Reinaldo Marcus Green (King Richard), who also serves as director. Additionally, Winderbaum revealed that cinematographer Robert Elswit (There Will Be Blood, Nightcrawler) handled the MCU special, which he described as “really emotional and wild.”
“We’re in editorial now, written by Jon Bernthal and Rei Green, our director, shot by Robert Elswit, Oscar winning DP. Beautiful piece, and incredibly acted by Jon.”
