Among several movies that this year blew away all expectations, Sinners was a subversive vampire movie that scored Warner Bros. one of several big wins at the box office. Several months on from the movie’s incredible success, star Hailee Steinfeld has reflected on the way one particular line from the movie has led to some awkward fan interactions, as they seem to want to constantly quote her character’s NSFW line from the film in some pretty embarrassing places.
Ryan Coogler’s Sinners stars Steinfeld along with Michal B. Jordan and Miles Caton and launched in cinemas back in April to a staggering $48 million domestic opening weekend, a figure that recouped half of the film’s $90 million budget and set it on its way to a $367 worldwide gross. The popularity of the movie was spurred on by some near-perfect reviews from both critics and audiences, and it became the most unexpected of pre-summer blockbusters.
Naturally, that kind of attention doesn’t happen without certain things being thrust into the zeitgeist where it builds and develops a life of its own. For Steinfeld, one particular line from the movie started doing the rounds on social media, and soon became one that she could not escape. The line goes a little like this (you may way to clutch your pearls in advance), when Steinfeld’s Mary tells Jordan’s Stack:
“I heard you loud and clear, but then you stuck your tongue in my cooze and f-cked me so hard I figured you changed your mind.”
While speaking to Variety, Steinfeld reacted to the viral line and how it had often been quoted to her in public. She said:
“I respect and appreciate you. I know what the line is. You don’t have to tell me. People like to bring up certain moments in that movie, certain lines. That’s always awkward in the market or out in public. I certainly didn’t expect that line — or any of the lines that people really ran with from Mary — to sort of explode the way they did. You never expect these things to blow up… and it’s always so interesting to see what people take with them and run with.”
‘Sinners’ Is One of the Greatest Vampire Movies Ever Made
The sub-genre of vampire movies is not short on content. From dozens of versions of Dracula, through popular 80s movies like Fright Night and The Lost Boys, and, of course, Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot, vampires have been a constant source of cinema hits (and plenty of misses) which makes it increasingly hard to do something new and different with the bloodsuckers. However, Coogler’s mix of vicious vamps, a smoldering Deep South tone, and some toe-tapping music to boot hit a sweet spot that saw it gain some impeccable reviews.
The film still holds a 97% Tomatometer score and 96% Popcornmeter rating on Rotten Tomatoes, one of the best sets of reviews of the year so far and of the genre as a whole. Sinners now stands among some of the best horror movies ever made, both in terms of critical and box office success. It has also joined with several other movies such as The Monkey and Weapons to continue a massive resurgence in the horror genre that doesn’t seem to be slowing down.
While Steinfeld may have a slight regret about her suggestive line becoming a viral sensation, she certainly has no regrets about being part of such a highly praised movie. Come awards season, it is believed that Sinners could be the next horror movie to buck trends and potentially land some prestigious titles at the biggest ceremonies.
