Loyal viewers of the FX series Alien: Earth have likely noticed a different hard rock song playing during the end credits of each episode throughout the first season, including tunes by Black Sabbath, Tool, Metallica, Godsmack, Queens of the Stone Age, and Pearl Jam. Apparently, those choices aren’t sitting well with Mars Volta singer Cedric Bixler-Zavala.
In a since-deleted Instagram post, Bixler-Zavala declared, “No more ‘Unc’ rock at the end of Alien: Earth episodes please. Fucking monster energy drink bullshit.”
When a fan asked the Mars Volta frontman, “Wait what’s wrong with Tool and QOTSA?,” in the comments, Bixler-Zavala answered, “Nothing at all. It just doesn’t fit on that show. It feels like Nancy Reagan pushing her DARE agenda on me but with that kinda music.”
The needle drops at the end of each Alien: Earth episode include Black Sabbath’s “The Mob Rules,” Tool’s “Stinkfist,” Metallica’s “Wherever I May Roam,” Jane’s Addiction’s “Ocean Size,” The Smashing Pumpkins’ “Cherub Rock,” Godsmack’s “Keep Away,” Queens of the Stone Age’s “Song for the Dead,” and Pearl Jam’s “Animal.”

Consequence‘s film and TV editor Liz Shannon Miller recently broke down the music on Season 1 of Alien: Earth, episode by episode. In the piece, the series’ music supervisor Maggie Phillips noted that in picking the music for the end credits, Alien: Earth creator Noah Hawley didn’t push to find songs that necessarily tied into the show.
“Some of the lyrics will tie into the story, enough for people to let their mind wander and try to understand why we put it in,” said Phillips. “We’re trying to just keep you guessing and keep you talking.”
It’s unclear if Bixler-Zavala took down his post (screenshot below) because he had a change of heart, or perhaps didn’t want to offend some of the bands mentioned above. Either way, he may have just popularized the term “unc rock.”
