[Warning: The below contains MAJOR spoilers for The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2, Episode 3 “Why Did the Mainlanders Cross the River?”]
Uh oh. Has Hershel Rhee (Logan Kim) been brainwashed into serving to the Dama (Lisa Emery) construct her courageous new world? And what does that imply for his strong-willed mom, Maggie (Lauren Cohan)? By the tip of the third episode of The Strolling Lifeless spinoff, it appeared clear that younger Hershel had drank the Dama’s Kool-Support — or possibly eaten an excessive amount of of her peanut brittle — and has determined to assist her carry her twisted imaginative and prescient of a revitalized New York Metropolis to life.
Under, we caught up with The Strolling Lifeless: Lifeless Metropolis‘s Logan Kim to speak about what’s happening in Hershel’s thoughts and what lies forward.
How would you describe Hershel’s emotions when he first meets the Dama within the flashback seen in the beginning of the episode? What’s he considering?
Logan Kim: Effectively, I believe he’s been tormented so lengthy by the Croat [Željko Ivanek] at that time — he’s simply in despair. And so, when any person comes up and affords him a serving to hand, or on this case some peanut brittle, he sees that as an indication of kindness. He’s nonetheless clearly a bit distrustful, however he will get extra weak [with the Dama] and opens up slightly bit extra himself.
Later, we see that she’s working to drive a wedge between Hershel and Maggie. Do you suppose that she is profitable in her mission? Or does it simply rattle him?
I believe he’s received plenty of conflicting feelings. On one hand, the Dama may be very convincing and he or she’s very manipulative. All the pieces she says sounds actually nice on paper. However in follow, he realizes he’s hurting his mother [and] the folks he does care about. And so, I don’t suppose he has a aspect that he essentially needs to decide on over the opposite [between the Dama and his mother]… ultimately, he does [choose], although.
Current day, on this episode, he’s trekking into Manhattan with Maggie. I like the scenes between them as a result of they’re at all times so loaded. There’s at all times massive emotions within the room with these two. How would you describe how he’s feeling about Maggie this season after getting her again?
I believe they’ve talked fairly a bit and I really feel like there’s been some connecting ever since we noticed the preliminary rescue. [But] I believe Maggie’s been attempting to hearken to him extra and actually hear him out and attempt to do what he needs. She doesn’t do it completely, however, you understand, he doesn’t do issues completely both. I believe Hershel sees that she’s attempting they usually’re in a greater place than they have been, for certain.
What was it like filming this episode’s scenes the place Hershel will get separated from Maggie and the group within the grass?
It was so claustrophobic. [Laughs] We had the set on a creek, or like a marsh, and there have been wood pallets we have been standing on. It was so superb filming and working by the tall grass as a result of it felt such as you have been actually working from zombies. It was a very nice time.

And that scene, in addition to the flashback the place the Dama rescues Hershel within the hallway — these have been your first main walker moments onscreen since becoming a member of TWDU, proper?
These have been my massive walker encounters, yeah. The very first that I did was these ones with the Dama and I truly received to do some battle scene. That was my first time killing a walker, and I assumed that was a lot enjoyable and it actually appears to be like nice on display screen. [The actors playing the walkers are] so convincing, so once they’re of their face, you actually need to push ’em away, so it helps. [Laughs]
Let’s speak concerning the Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) of all of it. Hershel is saved by Negan on this episode, however the face that Hershel makes when he sees Negan and it registers that this man he hates has saved him — Hershel’s simply so offended in that second. Hershel likes to say that he doesn’t care about Negan, that he’s Maggie’s drawback, however from seeing that face, it’s clear there’s plenty of unresolved emotions for Hershel, too.
I believe that Hershel sort of continually thinks about Negan, as a result of he is aware of that he’s the one factor that’s actually in between his relationship with Maggie. And [he thinks that] if he was gone, then all these different issues can be by some means resolved. Hershel sees Negan as the largest menace in his life. He has received this malice in direction of him — he needs to kill him in any respect prices, principally.
If Hershel was to see the Dama once more, do you suppose that he could be torn between siding along with her or with Maggie? Or do you suppose that the choice is obvious for him?
I believe that it’s attention-grabbing to carry up. He would undoubtedly be torn, and I believe it will be a tough choice, for certain. Maggie’s been [putting] plenty of effort into her relationship with him, and he sees that.
What’s it concerning the Dama that you just suppose he’s drawn to?
She’s so mild and he or she actually listens to what he has to say. She teaches him issues that he by no means considered, speaks to him by his creative varieties, and talks about historical past and all that. And I believe he actually [puts] a excessive worth on artwork in his life, and so that basically will get to him. However I assume it’s simply the best way she is with him that’s so alluring.
Are you creative in any respect? When you’ve got these drawings in entrance of you on set, are you contributing to them in any respect, or filling within the strains?
No, I’m a horrible artist. I’ve tried, I actually did. [And then] I used to be like, “Man, I suck at this.” [Laughs] I like music although. I play the guitar.
Effectively, the Dama would most likely approve of that, relying in your selection in musicians.
I’d play steel for the Dama. She’d love some Metallica, I believe.
Close to the tip of the episode, she approaches him and begins asking all these questions, like “what if there was the potential for reinvention?” What do you suppose that is doing in Hershel’s thoughts?
I believe that he sees the imaginative and prescient that she has, and I believe that she’s received slightly bit extra of a darker aspect of that imaginative and prescient that he doesn’t notice but. However he’s drawn to it, and he needs to see one thing nice, and he needs to see the good, massive, lovely metropolis because it as soon as was. And so, that’s very tempting to him. She does undoubtedly manipulate him efficiently, and he needs to assist her.
