For movie users always seeking hidden gems, movie-focused social media platform Letterboxd is introducing a new service: The Letterboxd Video Store, which will allow users to not just log their interest in movies, but rent them on VOD through the app.
“This isn’t a subscription service! No lock-in, no paywall. Just rent the films you want, whenever you want, and join the conversation with our community logging, reviewing and adding them to lists,” the announcement post explains.
Letterboxd is promising a curated experience, akin to the “Employee Picks” section at an old-school real-life video store, but fueled by Letterboxd users. The types of movies that the service will offer includes film festival selections that do not have distribution, new restorations, and “limited-time drops of sneak peeks and unreleased gems (only here for a short time).”

Rentals will be viewable on the web, iOS, Android, Apple TV, Android TV, Chromecast and Airplay, with additional smart TV apps in the works. Letterboxd also cheekily promises that there are “no late fees” for its rentals. The service is set to launch in early December. For more, check out the full announcement on Letterboxd.
