Let’s be honest: there are already way too many shows about Los Angeles.

It’s no surprise that television is obsessed with the magical city that defines Southern California, so it’s perhaps cheeky that Rachel Sennott’s new series is titled I Love LA.

At the same time, it’s hard not to roll your eyes at the title and wonder what this series can offer in terms of saying something new that hasn’t already been said about Los Angeles.

From the trailer, the show appears to fulfill its initial promise of a group of friends navigating the highs and lows of adulthood in the City of Angels.

If you’re thinking that this sounds about the most cookie-cutter-esque an HBO comedy show can get, I agree with you.

But unfortunately, my curiosity has gotten the better of me, and I will be tuning in, though it’ll mainly be for the one and only Josh Hutcherson.

Rachel Sennott’s Appeal … Or Lack Thereof

Before the show was titled I Love LA, it was initially named The Untitled Rachel Sennott Project.

Sennott’s name has been attached to the project from the very beginning, which has led to certain expectations about what this series might look like.

Sennott is best known for her roles in feature films such as Bottoms, Shiva Baby, and Bodies Bodies Bodies.

Across most of her roles, she brings a particular style of humor — often brutally honest and confrontational in the way she plays jokes — which, to her credit, works for most of the projects she’s in.

While she may have some dedicated fans who follow all her work, her appeal to a broader audience remains questionable.

Of course, not all great comedians need to have a general appeal, as some can find their niche and stick with it to succeed.

However, for a series on a commonly covered subject, there’s a need for a fresh perspective on tackling it in new ways.

After all, if anybody needs an awkward girl comedy series to watch, Girls has solidified itself as a classic.

I’m compelled to give Sennott the benefit of the doubt to see if she can truly offer a uniquely hilarious take on Los Angeles, but there’s good reason to be skeptical about how this series can make itself stand out.

I Can’t Wait to See Josh Hutcherson On My Screen Again

I’ll happily admit that I have tunnel vision when it comes to Josh Hutcherson.

Most people know Josh Hutcherson from his role as Peeta in The Hunger Games movies, as well as his starring roles in Bridge to Terabithia and Five Nights at Freddy’s.

    (Kenny Laubbacher/HBO)

While he might be recognized for his roles in movies, he hasn’t starred in many shows, aside from Future Man.

I Love LA marks one of the first major comedic projects in which Hutcherson is starring.

So, it’ll be exciting to see how Hutcherson approaches this role and how he can show off his comedic abilities.

He already has a reputation as a charismatic, versatile actor, which helps build on his appeal in his new role as Dylan, the boyfriend of Maia, Rachel Sennott’s character.

Even if the storylines he gets aren’t great, the benefit of watching the series will be seeing him play a supporting role and bring his signature natural charm to it.

My desire to see Josh Hutcherson in a comedy series overrules my doubt about how special this series will be, so at the end of the day, I will be watching I Love LA — for better or for worse.

Will you be tuning into I Love LA? Why or why not?
