Hollywood superstar Leonardo DiCaprio is currently enjoying the positive reception to his latest film, the action thriller One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson. The film has made him a potential frontrunner for next year’s Oscar race, possibly leading to another Best Actor award to join the one he won in 2016 for his performance in The Revenant.
One Battle After Another co-stars Sean Penn, Regina Hall, and Benicio del Toro, who joined DiCaprio for a recent interview with Collider. Although they talked plenty about Anderson’s film, Collider‘s Steven Weintraub started the conversation by asking the cast about their favorite projects by prominent directors, and when talk turned to Christopher Nolan, DiCaprio and del Toro basically answered at the same time: “The Dark Knight.” (Or “Batman,” as del Toro put it.)
Even though Nolan has made his fair share of fan-favorite films, The Dark Knight might be his most beloved feature. The astounding sequel to Nolan’s own Batman Begins was a game-changer. Many might assume DiCaprio would pick Inception — he did star in it, after all — and that would have been a great answer, but it’s hard to argue with The Dark Knight.
DiCaprio and Del Toro Also Talked About Their Spielberg and Kubrick Favorites
The conversation also saw the two stars talking about their favorite projects by Steven Spielberg and Stanley Kubrick. With regard to Spielberg, DiCaprio was moved to mention a movie other than his crime thriller Catch Me If You Can. After thinking for a few seconds, he picked Jaws while stressing that it’s “hard to pick,” considering he’s made “so many masterpieces.” Del Toro chose E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial as his favorite.
When it came to Kubrick, DiCaprio mused, “That’s tough… there’s too many to pick.” That being said, he mentioned A Clockwork Orange and Barry Lyndon before he and del Toro agreed that the absolute best is 2001: A Space Odyssey, the director’s 1968 sci-fi masterpiece. DiCaprio described the experience of seeing it on the big screen, courtesy of Nolan himself:
“I remember watching it for the first time on VHS. But then I got to see it at the Cinerama dome. And I think Christopher Nolan found the original film, and projected it at the Cinerama dome with the original sound, and talk about a time that was so ahead of its time. It’s just incredible. And beyond the movie, it’s kind of a spiritual experience.”
