Iconic saxophonist, composer, and Solar Ra Arkestra chief Marshall Allen is celebrating his centenarian standing with new music. The 100-year-old artist can be releasing his debut solo album, titled New Daybreak, on February 14th. The announcement was accompanied by the discharge of the title observe and its accompanying video. Stream it beneath.
The celebrated artist has over 70 years of recording and efficiency to his title, however New Daybreak will mark the primary venture underneath his title alone. The album, described as “a love letter to spacetime that channels a century of musical transience and transcendence,” can be seven tracks in whole. Not one to be deterred by the passage of time, Allen started recording the venture in Philadelphia two days after his one centesimal birthday.
“New Daybreak” is an easygoing, nostalgic observe with a heat instrumental line from Allen on the saxophone, paired with lyrics by Solar Ra Arkestra bandmate Knoel Scott and vocals equipped by Neneh Cherry. Allen collaborated carefully with Scott throughout New Daybreak, with the pair sifting via unreleased tracks and archived music to create the eventual tracklist.
“[Scott] knew Marshall higher than anybody, and his deep understanding of Marshall’s compositions guided the choice of materials for the album,” shared the venture’s producer Jan Lankisch. The center of the LP is characterised as “the melding of the previous and the longer term, of legacy and discovery.”
Since launching within the Nineteen Fifties, Solar Ra Arkestra have stood as leaders in Afrofuturism. In 2020, underneath Allen’s route, the jazz collective dropped their first new band venture in 20 years
