The Henry Cavill reboot of Highlander may have hit a small stumbling block thanks to the actor’s recent injury, but that hasn’t stopped a first synopsis for the action fantasy being revealed by insider Daniel Richtman in a new leak.
After leaving behind Superman and The Witcher, Henry Cavill has been attaching himself to several nostalgic and potentially big fantasy projects, including John Wick director Chad Stahelski’s remake of the classic 1986 movie starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery. Highlander was not the greatest movie of the 1980s, but it became a huge cult classic, and there is a lot of buzz about the remake, which has been assembling a capable cast over the last several months. Now, thanks to Richtman’s leak, the mostly familiar synopsis for the movie reads:
“Centuries after his first death on a Scottish battlefield, immortal warrior Connor MacLeod lives quietly in the modern world, haunted by loss and the endless cycle of violence among his kind. When the ruthless immortal Kurgan resurfaces, backed by a secret organization bent on unlocking the secret of eternal life, Connor is forced back into the Game – an ancient battle where ‘there can be only one.’
“Guided by his mentor Ramírez and a mortal ally, archaeologist Kate Bennett, Connor must confront his past and rediscover his purpose. As immortals clash across time and continents, the fight for the mysterious ‘Prize’ becomes a battle for humanity’s soul.”
‘Highlander’ Is an All-Star Action Fantasy Adventure in the Making
Cavill stars in Highlander as Connor MacLeod, an immortal who ends up, as suggested above, being drawn into a deadly battle that will leave “only one.” The film has added several other big names to the cast list recently as production ramped up to begin filming. This included Russell Crowe, who will take over the role of Ramirez from Sean Connery, Dave Bautista, who plays the main antagonist, Kurgan, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Marisa Abela, Max Zhang, and, in a late in the day announcement, Jeremy Irons.
Although every remake comes with cries of outrage from those who love the original version, Highlander is a movie that could very easily be elevated by Stahelski’s action credentials as the mastermind behind the John Wick franchise, an improved set of special effects, and a strong cast. However, we will have to wait a while yet to see if this is the case, as the movie is not expected to arrive in cinemas until 2027.
Cavill’s recent leg injury, sustained while training for the film, pushed back the shooting schedule to January 2026. While the actor has recently posted several videos of him undergoing more training despite his injury, it seems that there will be a short delay in the movie really getting underway. Despite that, it is still likely that the film will be released sometime in 2027.
