A few days ago I stumbled upon LA collective wst cmplx and my faith in the future of soulful r&b has been further enhanced. Comprised of 8 extremely talented individuals, the group mends together their diverse musical backgrounds, genres, experiences and influences into a unique and prone to constant evolution sound that will whisk you away from the very first note.
With a noble goal of redefining the West Coast sound and injecting it with a dose of optimism and introspection, wst cmplx champion self-love and creative honesty. Anything, starting from their visual identity to the music they make is a bold and brave stament for the power of the collective over individual.
Their July release “FLOWERS TO THE FALLEN” is a memorial to those we have lost, and is a reminder that through loss and life we can give glory and remain inspired to continuously grow despite any trials or tribulations. “It was written and composed in a single day, and since then we have been experimenting with various instruments and sounds on it resulting in the version we’ve submitted. It’s a smooth, emotional song about grief and reflection on those we’ve lost and the resilience of those left behind.“, they elaborate.
I love the intricate jazz instrumental, filled with tight drumming details and crisp sounds in the background. A perfect backdrop to the powerful and emotional message coming with the song. One of the most impressive new things in the r&b space I’ve heard in a while.
