Keanu Reeves is feeling the benefit of Good Fortune in more ways than one this weekend. As his new movie, in which he plays an inept angel that enables a life-swap scenario between Aziz Ansari and Seth Rogen, debuts in cinemas, the film’s Rotten Tomatoes rating has ensured that Reeves has continued an impressive run of movies, with his last 12 films all being rated in the “fresh” category.
It is often a struggle for actors to consistently deliver great movies. Whether it is a subject that some cinemagoers just don’t get, a director’s style that jars with expectation, or a script that doesn’t produce the kind of emotions it needs to in order to fully engage its audience, there are many pitfalls for a film to stumble into on its way to a Tomatometer score.
Good Fortune has secured a 75% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics, extending the run of highly praised movies Reeves has starred in that began in January 2019 with John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum. While some movies have come close to breaking the six-year long, 12-movie streak – such as The Matrix Resurrections, which scored a borderline 63% and The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run with 66% – Reeves’ consistency is pretty impressive, given how hard it often seems to please the majority of people these days.
Other movies in Reeves’ “fresh” list include Always Be My Maybe, Toy Story 4 (his highest rated movie of the period with 96%), Bill & Ted Face the Music, Sonic the Hedgehog 3, and John Wick spinoff Ballerina. Now, Good Fortune has found a place on that list, and it seems to be pleasing audiences too.
‘Good Fortune’ Reworks ‘Freaky Friday’ and ‘Trading Places’
Over the years, there have been many body-swap and life-swap comedies, and that is exactly what Good Fortune is. With a relatively short 98 minute runtime, Good Fortune’s synopsis reads:
“A well-meaning but rather inept angel named Gabriel (Keanu Reeves) meddles in the lives of a struggling gig worker (Aziz Ansari) and a wealthy venture capitalist (Seth Rogen).”
Some reviews have issues with the story being quite familiar and the overall outcome being predictable, but in the end it is about the journey as much as the ending, and many feel that the time spent watching the movie was more than worth it. “Plenty of laughs with powerful social commentary,” says one review. Another praised the “great casting,” and a third called it “an instant classic.”
The praise for Reeves’ comedic turn in the movie bodes well for several other comedy roles that the actor has lined up, including a reunion with Cameron Diaz in the Jonah Hill movie, Outcome, which is set for release on Apple TV in 2026. Can this and the actor’s other upcoming movies continue his winning streak into a seventh year? Would anyone really want to bet against it?
