A late-night post on X/Twitter by Journey lead guitarist Neal Schon suggested that keyboardist-guitarist Jonathan Cain had quit the band, but both a spokesperson and Schon later clarified that Cain is still an active member of the band.
In his original tweet, Schon wrote, “Jonathan Cain announced his farewell to Journey tonight. I’m nowhere near done! Journey has so much more life ahead! I’m sure we will have a great tour!” He then added, “He wants to do his ministry.”
A spokesperson for Cain later issued a statement, “Jonathan Cain remains an active member of Journey, and any reports suggesting otherwise are inaccurate. He is fully dedicated to touring with the band over the next couple of years and has only expressed plans to retire at a later time.”

Schon, meanwhile, later clarified, “Jon is playing. He’s saying at the end of 26-27 he will move on. We will have a great couple of years.”
Cain and Schon remain the only two classic members of the band, which has seen numerous lineup changes over the years. Drummer Deen Castronovo has been around on and off since 1998. Singer Arnel Pineda joined in 2007, while keyboardist Jason Derlatka and bassist Todd Jensen are recent additions to the lineup following the firings of Ross Valory and Steve Smith.
Schon and Cain were embroiled in a legal dispute with one another over the band’s finances while still bandmates in Journey, before finally settling their dispute in 2024.
Cain recently announced his new single “No One Else,” a tribute to slain right-wing activist Charlie Kirk, which is set for release on October 24th. He has served as a worship leader at Florida’s City of Destiny church, at one point led by his pastor wife, Paula White-Cain, who was appointed by President Trump as the leader of the newly formed White House Faith Office.
