“He’s a very gifted musician, and he stated, ‘Let me fiddle with it for an evening,’” Cantrell recalled in an interview with the “Lipps Service” podcast [as transcribed via a press release]. “He got here again the following day with that piece of music, and it sounded killer. I introduced it in to [producer] Joe Barresi and he stated, ‘Man, it is best to do that with all of them.’”
The outcomes are principally a brand new monitor altogether, with Cantrell delivering his lyrics in a plaintive drawl — like a poetry studying — towards stark acoustic guitars and haunting backing vocals. Boy Tillekens accompanying video animation is desolate and befitting.
Taking Barresi’s recommendation, Cantrell despatched the lyrics for the opposite tracks from I Need Blood to his musical colleagues for them so as to add their very own musical touches, identical to Urasky did on “Vilified,” rendering a complete companion album.
“They hadn’t heard the songs, which I assumed was actually cool,” Cantrell stated. “I received this inventive stew going of sending the lyrics out to individuals, having them provide you with the music, and sending it again. We ended up with 9 items of actually attention-grabbing takes on the lyrics, however the music is completed by inventive companions of mine, and it has nothing to do with the true music, so it’s actually a standalone piece.”
Further collaborators on the venture embody Barresi, Greg Puciato (Higher Lovers, The Black Queen), Roy Mayorga (Ministry), Gil Sharone (Stolen Infants, Crew Sleep), Rani Sharone (Stolen Infants), George Adrian (The Maybirds), composer Vincent Jones, and producer Michael Rozon — lots of whom have been concerned with Cantrell’s solo work or reside exhibits in recent times.
