Jennifer Lawrence gives a stunning performance with her raw depiction of love and longing amid spiraling mental health struggles in the new trailer for her upcoming psychological thriller. Die, My Love follows Grace (Lawrence) and Jackson (Robert Pattinson), a couple whose marriage is rocked after the birth of their child and their move from New York to a small town.
In a remote forgotten rural area, a mother struggles to maintain her sanity as she battles with psychosis.
Interspersed between frenzied love and frantic fights, the film fearlessly delves into the topic of postpartum depression and the effect it can have on multiple aspects of someone’s life. In one poignant line, Grace finds herself explaining why she no longer writes, as she says: “I’m stuck between wanting to do something and not wanting to do anything at all.”
While postpartum depression is an important theme, during a candid conversation with critic Elvis Mitchell in Cannes, director Lynne Ramsay warned viewers that it shouldn’t be the sole takeaway of the movie, per Deadline.
“It’s not about that. It’s about a relationship breaking down, it’s about love breaking down, and sex breaking down after having a baby. And it’s also about a creative block.”
Parenthood Changed How Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence Approach Their Careers
Lawrence and Pattinson’s real-life roles as parents played an important part in how they approach their work as actors as a whole. During a May interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lawrence admitted having children “changes everything,” calling the experience “brutal and incredible.” The Hunger Games star welcomed her son Cy with husband Cooke Maroney in February 2022. Three years later, she gave birth to her second child.
“I didn’t know that I could feel so much, and my job has a lot to do with emotion, and they’ve opened up the world to me. It’s almost like a blister or something, so sensitive. So they’ve changed my life, obviously, for the best, and they’ve changed me creatively. I highly recommend having kids if you want to be an actor.”
Pattinson, who shares a 1-year-old daughter with actress Suki Waterhouse, added that becoming a dad “reinvigorated the way I approach work” and made him feel like a “completed person.” The Twilight actor also praised Ramsay for her work as a director and the environment she cultivated throughout production.
“This was someone I’ve always wanted to work with, and you create an atmosphere on set where I don’t need to really describe things as like, hard or easy. It’s quite an unusual environment. But when you trust your director so much… you create an aura on set where you’re being led in the direction. You don’t really know exactly where it is, but to trust the director so much.”
Before hitting the big screen, Die, My Love was a book of the same name by Ariana Harwicz that was released in 2012. More than 10 years later, it was announced that Mubi had acquired the distribution rights to the film adaptation.
Die, My Love hits theaters on Nov. 14.
