Let’s get into it!
A terrified woman is hiding in a basement when whoever she’s hiding from finds her, and we hear her scream!
Morgan comes into the bullpen, announcing how she’s late because she had a ticket. She’s frustrated that her consultant badge doesn’t get her out of tickets, and she wants something else.
But the bullpen is all on pins and needles because Soto is on a call, and they think it’s because she’s getting word about the captain’s news. Soto comes out and tells everyone to get back to work, as it wasn’t about that.
She assigns Morgan and the others the case, and they listen to the 911 call where the victim is crying and that someone shot another woman. They identify the caller as Raina, and they head to her house to speak to her.
Raina says that she didn’t make the phone call, but Morgan knows she’s not telling the truth. Morgan knows she made the call because Raina is Gullah Geechee, so she has a very particular accent, which both Morgan and Karedec noticed.
However, Raina is still denying things. Morgan noticed the burnt patterns in the kitchen and the pots, but Raina isn’t changing her story, which means that she doesn’t want to tell them and is scared. But they can’t do anything about it.
Back at the station, Morgan uses Karadec’s computer to check on the Roman situation. He tells her that for Soto to pull off the surveillance that she has, she had to have some juice. They talk about Soto possibly getting the Captain gig.
If she becomes captain, then Karadec will become acting lieutenant, and Morgan will get a new partner. She is upset at the prospect of this, only wanting to work with Karadec or Daphne and Oz, but he tells her there are no throuples in law enforcement (a lack of imagination, she retorts back. I LOVE Morgan).
He reassures her that if there is a transition, they’ll make it work. They get a phone call about Raina, and they find her dead at her home.
Morgan determines that Raina was pushed down the stairs.
Oz and Karadec interview the next-door neighbor, Logan, who threw a party and is a drug dealer, based on Morgan’s observations. Logan says that he’s the local pharmacist. He hooks people who need meds up when the system locks them out. Raina was one of his customers whom he loved.
Karadec and Morgan investigate Raina’s home again, and the basement. They figure out that Logan was at Raina’s house, but they piece together that she had early-onset dementia. Logan being in her house could’ve been him checking on her. He did things like stop her coffee maker from beeping and so forth.
But Raina made that call, but didn’t remember she made it. They find a phone in her basement, where she made the call, and they find a vintage bloody dress. So, she did witness something; they just have to figure out when.
Morgan uses the dress and the history surrounding it, and when it was made, to narrow things down to eliminate the cold cases they were into.
Based on that and Raina saying that the victim was shot, they figure out that it’s the cold case of a young Black woman, Greta St John, in the early 2000s. And presumably, the person who killed Greta killed Raina, too.
Daphne and Oz intend to speak with Eddie, the owner of the club where Greta died. Whereas Morgan and Karadec go to speak to Lucy, the woman who was calling Raina repeatedly before she died.
Lucy says that Raina and Greta were rivals; they were both performers, and Lucy was writing a piece about lost idols of the ’90s.
Eddie shares the music of Greta before she was on the rise and after, and it sounds like a totally different person. The two had the same manager, and everyone talks about how shady he was
The manager used Raina to get to Greta. Everyone was scared of him, and that’s why they wouldn’t have been of use during the investigation into Greta’s murder at the Black Jewel originally.
Soto announces that she’s not getting the Captain gig and that they’re bringing someone in from another squad. She gives them a pep talk. Everyone is upset on her behalf, but she tries to redirect them to solving the case.
They find footage outside of the Black Jewel of Mack, the manager, arguing with Raina. They head there to talk to him, and it’s a tense and hilarious affair. Morgan bulldozes into the VIP section, eating snacks and bonding with some of the other women there, while Mac lays out threats about calling his lawyer, who specializes in collecting badges.
Morgan figures out that Mac and Greta were a couple based on their matching compass tattoos, and Karadec presses on the idea that Mac bought Raina that house after Greta’s death, most likely to shut her up.
Back at the station, Morgan and Soto study photos and things and realize that Greta had a baby based on the splint she wore in one photo, her flat shoes, and the way she styled her hair because it was likely falling out post-partum.
They presume that Greta hid her baby (Lucy?), and that’s what may have triggered Mac and him potentially murdering her.
Mac also had an injury after New Year’s. He shot her in the chest, went to shoot her again, but the gun jammed, causing him to injure his hand and leaving a scar, before he shot her again. Raina witnessed it.
Morgan wants to go with them when they raid the club to get Mac, but Karadec doesn’t allow it. He doesn’t want to put her in danger. But he promises that she’ll get to see his smug face when he brings her in.
Karadec and Mac have a standoff when he flees the middle of the club, and Mac takes someone hostage. He claims he’d rather get shot and killed than go back to jail, so the standoff results in a shot. Later, Karadec is in with Internal Affairs.
Morgan is worried about this situation. Karadec cannot work the case or any of them until he’s cleared by Psych, which may take time. Karadec asks IA to make a call to get him into psych sooner, and he cites that if the job was done right the first time, he wouldn’t have been in this situation. He’s devoted to the case and seeing it through.
The IA guy agrees to make the call, and Karadec thanks him. But he expresses concerns about Morgan. He claims that Morgan’s value has him nervous and makes him look at their reports more often. It makes you wonder if Morgan is the reason Soto didn’t get the Captain gig.
Morgan calls Karadec out on pretending that he’s fine. It’s the first time Karadec has fired his weapon and actually hit his target. He talks about his discipline and how he’s prepared for that moment for 20 years, even though he hoped that day wouldn’t come.
After looking at Mac’s car, they figure out that Mac was two hours away when Raina was killed, so he killed Greta but not Raina. They figure someone killed Raina in revenge for helping Mac cover up Greta’s death.
They figured out that it was Greta’s missing daughter, Lucy. And they confront her about it, piecing together all the evidence.
Lucy said that Raina was a part of covering up Greta’s death. She said Raina flipped out on her, threatening never to speak to her again, and she snapped and pushed her down the stairs. They arrest her.
Morgan uses Karadec’s computer to look into Arthur Ellis Landscaping, and then she takes a moment to tell him that he was right to keep her away from the raid. She’s not used to people looking out for her and protecting her.
He also mentions that she was right about his hiding behind silence.
Before she leaves, she heads into Soto’s office to tell her that Soto can be upset with her, express things, and confide in her as a friend because she’s not the police, so Soto doesn’t have to put on airs for her. Soto does admit that she’s pissed about losing out to the captain and that it should have been her.
As Morgan leaves the building, she bumps into a guy who makes small talk with her. He seems very interested, and at some point, acknowledges that he knows who she is and wants to meet her. It puts Morgan on edge, but when he mentions that he missed his floor to keep talking to her and shares where he was supposed to stop, she pieces it together.
He introduces himself as Nick Wagner, the new captain.
