High Potential Is Threatening the Same Old Arc with Wagner

The last thing we need is the same old repetitive story, but it looks like High Potential could provide that.

Captain Wagner is now at the precinct, and he’s here to stay.

Throughout High Potential Season 2 Episode 5, he pulled everyone in for one-on-one chats. While for some it was about themselves, for Karadec, it was clearly all about Morgan Gillory.

    (Disney/Mitch Haaseth)

Wagner has already met Morgan and heard all about her, so it looks like he could become a threat.

    Time to Change the Narrative

I’m already bored with the Wagner storyline, but I don’t want to be, which is why I would love to see High Potential turn this storyline on its head.

The show has already managed to do that with the Roman arc, as while everyone assumed Mekhi Phifer would play Roman, it was clear that it was too obvious.

High Potential Season 2 needs to do the same with the Wagner storyline, as there is no way to do the annoying boss any differently.

And it’s not like there’s any need to remove Morgan from her consultant position.

Wagner pointed out to Karadec that she is a good partner for him, and their closing rate has gone up considerably.

Isn’t this a sign that she needs to stick around, even if she does have an issue with following the rules?

A good boss would see that she’s an asset.

I understood in the first season of High Potential when there was pushback about letting Morgan in.

She’d already had a history with law enforcement, and she wasn’t following any of the rules.

In fact, even Karadec didn’t want to work with her, but he soon came around when he realized she was onto something.

Those above Soto had to accept that having Morgan was beneficial for case closure rates.

With them moving on from trying to fire her, it doesn’t make sense for Wagner to try to do it either, but he certainly seems a little too obsessed with her.

This Is How It Should Happen

I have a way for High Potential to turn the narrative on its head: Wagner’s interest in Morgan should be because he can see her value.

    High Potential
    (Disney/Mitch Haaseth)

He comes from a PD dynasty, and he clearly has experience in the field.

While many likely thought he bought his way to the top, Morgan has noticed other things about him.

Now, it’s unclear whether he’s missing his work in the field due to the two out of three correct observations, but Wagner has shown that he’s interested in seeing what Morgan can do.

This could be a trap, though, and I don’t trust him, while I’m still sure High Potential is going with a tropey storyline just to add drama and frustration.

To turn the story on its head, Wagner could consider whether hiring consultants is a good idea, or he could even look at moving Morgan to other departments to work with other detectives.

This Could Tie In with The Game Maker Too

    High Potential
    (Disney/Mitch Haaseth)

At the same time, this could connect back to High Potential’s Game Maker arc, which I’m sure isn’t over, with Wagner wondering whether someone like the Game Maker can work with the police and earn their release.

I’m not sure if that would be better or worse than the standard dramatic trope of a new boss trying to kick Morgan out, but it would certainly prove that the writers can bring us something fresh.

As of right now, I’m bored with Wagner already, and I don’t want that to be the case for a show that’s so strong and intriguing everywhere else.
